axle removal

well I needed to do my front brakes , so I took the brakes all apart so I could service them. I also needed to determine what was wrong with my front axle , so I put the truck up on jack stands , locked the hubs , removed the front wheels, put the truck in 4h and everything spins ,, EXVEPT, the drives side axle assembly , the outer u joint is still their and in one peice, so im assuming their is something further in ...

I was happy to find that the front end on my 85 F-250 4x4, came apart just like an early dana 44... however, I cant seem to get the spindle assembly off... I got all the bolts off, but the spindle is frozen...is their a puller that i need,, or just some hammering with a board and hammer... or some liquid heat???

And when I do get the spindle off!!! what about the axle??? im not sure if I got a dana 44 or a dana 50, but I would assume that they are very similiar. Does the axle just float in the tube, or is their a c-clip inside the front case that i need to remove???

Make sure you really have a problem by getting somebody to hold the passenger side axle while you turn the front driveshaft.
Yes, the spindle really sticks in there. I take a cold chisel and drive it between the spindle and the knuckle. There are no c-clips. Just jerk the axle out. If you want to take the pumpkin off, you are going to have to take the other axle out too. You are having too much fun. Check your ball joints, and if you take the other side off, check the slip yoke and splines. If you have the money, nows the time to fix everything while you have it tore apart.

Alternatively (if you have the bucks) you can pull the whole works out and have it rebuilt by a pro-shop.

OK ,,, THE SAGA CONTINUES,, ITS FRIGGIN HOLLOWEEN SO WHY NOT RIGHT!!!!

SO I GOT THE SPINDLE OFF,, PULLED THE AXLE AND UMM ,,, IT WAS FINE,, I LOOKED INSIDE THE WHOLE WHERE THE AXLE WAS,,, AND IT "LOOKED" OK,,, NO VISIABLE BROKEN STUFF,, SO I PUT THE AXLE BACK IN, AND STARTED REASSEMBLING THE BRAKES AND STUFF.. BUT I HAVENT FINISHED YET,,BECAUSE I BROKE CALIAPER BOLT ON THE PASS SIDE, AND BROKE A DRILL BIT IN IT , AS WELL AS AN EASY OUT. SO IM GOING TO HAVE TO PLAY WITH THAT TOMMORROW TO TRY TO GET THE BRAKES BACK TOGTHER...

SO , THE QUESTION STILL REMAINS??

WHY WOULD THE PASS SIDE AXLE SPIN IN 4WHEEEL DRIVE , AND THE DRIVERS NOT EVEN MOVE?? I HAVE MILE MARKER HUBS(GARBAGE AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED) AND THEY SEEM TO WORK FINE,,,

WHEN THE TRUCK WAS ON THE GROUND AND I PUT IT IN 4WHEEL AND TRIED TO DRIVE IT ,, I GOT A CLUNKING SOUND FROM THE FRONT END.
AND WITH THE TRUCK IN THE AIR, IN 4WHEEL, RUNNING, THEIR ISNT ANY SOUND WHAT SO EVER COMING FROM THE DRIVETRAIN? EVERYTHING SPINS SMOOTHLY EXCEPT THE DRIVERS SIDE AXLE DOESNT MOVE !!!!!

You have an "open" frontend, versus a limited slip. The power is going to go to the wheel with least resistance. The spider gears in the differential are what cause this and it is normal. Like I said before, hold one wheel, and the other should turn. You can test both sides this way. That is why if one lockout hub screws up=no 4wd at all. If you have a clunking, check everything out real good-universal joints and especially the slip yokes. Make sure the transfer case is out of 4wd, and you should be able to wiggle everything around. Grab the front driveshaft and try to move it up and down. If there's any side play in the slip yoke, it's on it's way out.
