One way to check the intake manifold gasket... put it in 1st, wind it up to 6000RPM, let off the gas quick - bango! big vacuum. Then, once it's down to 1500 RPM, hit the gas again. If you get a huge blue PUFF after you hit the gas again, you got an intake manifold leak. If you get a SMALL puff after hitting the gas, you might have a bad intake valve seal - or a very minor intake gasket leak.

If it smokes under load, wide-open-throttle, you have something else. Could it be the oil feed hole for the rockers leaking into a cylinder? which cylinder is it?

Smoking AFTER it warms up sounds just like the time my intake gaskets didn't seal - turns out the stock bolts bottomed out in the head with the Edel intake.

Thanks Art. That first scenario sounds about right. I've pulled it into my shop. Opened the hood, then decided it's good drinking weather....

How many times have I R&R'd the intake since I started this truck project about 4 years ago? Somebody make me decent offer for the whole mess.......

No, I think that was simply a fuel starvation issue I resolved with some changes to the plumbing.

It never really popped and sputtered ..it just quit. But it made a full pull last time at the track. Unfortunately, the motor mount nut came loose and that kept us from making another good pass. We twsited the motor up a couple times, that may have damage some of the carb and tranny linkage and maybe even done something to lead to my smoiking issues....ALthough, I can't figure out how...

That was 14.2 at 98 mph with Strokster riding with me. On the street tires, with a weak 60 ft time, and I hit the MSD rev limiter in 1st and 2nd with some clumsy shifts...But, it didn't run out of fuel in the end like it had been doing...

you can see all the details in the "timelsips" section of FTE forum...

If it wren't for Unlce Sam wanting some more money, I'd probably be sending my heads to K.C. and looking at the bigger Crane Hyd. Roller, the 941.

But, despite sending the govt. more money last year than we made our first year of marriage together, the Feds want more :-( We paid enough in taxes last year to pay off her SUV, my Camaro and My motorcycle...

Well Greg, all I can say is..you and your wife have real good educations...

I even have a 30 year old degree in mechanical engineering..but thing have changed so much...It take that paper and more at 50 just to get me in the door!!

I start with Safety Kleen on March 7th.. as a Sales,Service, and Repair Rep!!

And I had to fight with Corp..in Plano Texas..to give me 45K as an annual base with 5% Com....

But that was better than being a Heavy Equipment Operator like I was at 35K a year tops!!
