my 98 expy has recently showing signs of 103k miles of transmission use. it feels kinda like torque converter goes in and out of lock up. it also stumbles really bad at 1300-1700 rpm, which sometimes throws a check engine light. after having run cleanly for a while this light goes off. now one of the national transmissions chains has a radio spot i heard that targets all the trouble i am having, so iguess this is somethis not so serious just common. just wondering if any one has had the same thing or knows what could cause the problems listed?
If it's a 5.4, a coil misfire will cause the same feeling as a slipping transmission. My 99 with 107,000 will do this from time to time, but as of yet the misfire has not been bad enough to throw a code. Once it does, I'll replace the COP(Coil-On-Plug).
If you take it to Autozone when it throws a code, they will read it for free and let you know if you have a misfire and what cylinder it is. (1 thru 4 are on the left (drivers) side front to back). If the COP is bad, they sell them for about $45 each.
I have a friend with a '97 F-150 that did the exact same thing and his was also the COP.
change the fluid, not backflush. you can drain the torque converter on this year model. my 98 has 125,000 on it and i change it each year. i tow a 7000lb trailer, so i think it deserves it! good luck
