Angry Ford AOD Transmission Problems

I have a 2000 Explorer XLS W/ 4.0 Litre Engine. When I first take off the Tranny takes 2 to 3 seconds of Hesitation Before it goes into 2nd. It just revs at a higher RPM then catches. the rest of the gears are ok. The second problem is when driving a start and stop trip like on side streets the OD light will start flashing and if I stop the tranny slips until the speed catches up w/ the rpm's or it changes gear but, if I shut the car off all is ok and the light stops flashing and the tranny drives normal (except for the delay going into 2nd) has anyone had this problem before and if so what was the cure? Is it one thing causing both problems or 2 seperate problems? Thanks all

It may be a problem with your sensor on the differential. I had a similar problem with my old 99 Ranger (apparently not uncommon for Rangers and Explorers). I replaced the sensor on the differential (less than $15 and 5 minutes) and the OD light flashing stopped and the reving before shifting to 2nd stopped. At least that was the problem I had. You might pull the codes to be sure, however.

I can't remember exactly, but I think it was the ABS speed sensor (a while since I had my Ranger), but it was on the differential. Perhaps others might clarify.

Gunslinger,

Been there. My issue was the 1-2 shift accumulator springs were shattered. This was a 4r70w in my wife's 99 mountaineer. If you do have a 4r70w drop the pan, snap ring and cap for the accumulator. I advise doing it quick because if that is your issue, those broken springs are beating things up in there.
Good Luck.
Peace.

P.S. I had a thread in transmissions on this.

I'm not sure which Tranny is in the Explorer but I'm going to get under it and see for sure. I checked it out this weekend and it is the 1st to 2nd shift. Was the O.D. lite flashing on stop & go trips as well? Did it stop flashing after you turned off the engine and restarted it? Well Thanks for the response to my post. I hope thats it for sure as these elec. tranny's are expensive to fix.

Symptoms were slow 1-2 shift at light pedal. Sometimes 3500 to 4500 rpm. We did not have any od light or check engine light out of the ordinary.

Good luck
