Carburetor Recommendations

I've decided to replace my current banged up, leaking 4 bbl. edelbrock with a new Carb. But which to get.....I would like some "out of the box" convenience....and also something that won't require constant attention. I have a 1967 F250 4x4 with a 390 and headers. I currently have a manual choke...which is real campy, but I'm not opposed to going electric......Is there much preference between Edelbrock and Holley? Which units are the best fit for my engine.....I use this truck as my daily driver/work truck (I'm a General Contractor....the most I haul is a few tools and paperwork!).

Carb

I agree that Edelbrock is the way to go. One backfire through the carb on a Holley and you will blow a power valve. I had a 4bl Holley on my 302 and was constantly having to mess with it and/or having trouble with it. When I rebuilt the engine I went with an Edelbrock and it has been trouble free. Just my 2 cents worth. PS For out of the box convenience my Edelbrock was great!

I'm looking at the 1405 or the 1406...one is manual choke and the other, electric....I would imagine that 600 cfm is all I need.

remember you can always get a jet kit and play with different size jets to gain a little more power.

A Holley no longer has a power valve blowing problem, due to being redesigned with back fire protection. Holleys are now guaranteed for life against harming a power valve by back firing.

Carb

Nice to know that Steve. My Holley used to drive me crazy until I replaced the power valve. No problems with that now though.... Any idea where there are good wrecing yards around here that have Ford trucks? (saw that you are in Destin/ Ft Walton, Crestview here)

carb

i bought a power valve saver that you tap out the original one and you replace it with the new one they say it will not suck in air that causes the backfire. i got it a locak kragen store and summitt has them fairly cheap 6$

I just pulled a 1406 that has been on my truck for 25,000 miles and replaed it with a Holley. I would have never thought there would be as much difference between the two (600 CFMs) The Holley really woke my FE up. Gas milage went down but I think that is because I have had my foot in it toooo much. LOL

Hey Mike. Right down the road from you, there's 3 salvage yards. Two of them are west on 90 from Crestview. C & J is a right and then a left off of 90. It may be listed under C & J sand blasting, or even CJ's. I don't remember. Then there's another yard on the left, over towards Holt. It's tough to find, but it's on 90 also. Then there's another yard over by Mossy Head. It's also tough to find. You turn off from 90, and then cross the R R tracks. I've found good parts at all 3 places.
