I've been using the boards, researching them for a few days now....
Here's my scenario:
02 f250 4x4 on road 80% off road 10% trailer 10% of the time. However, when Im offroad and trailering, which happens a few long weekends a year, its on top of ALOT of snow (Snowmobile in N wisconson). my 4x4 is really a 2 wheel wonder..I have esof.
ARB is the only selectable locker I'm aware of for the rear. The also make one for the front. They do require an air supply to engage them......ARB sells a small compressor to run them, or you can use a bigger compressor or a powertank and regulate the pressure to use with the ARBs. A good install is key to the ARB operation.
If you have the Dana 60 front there is also the electrac available....which is electrically engaged.
If you've done gears before you could probably install either one of the lockers. You could always get the locker, read over the install directoins and see if it's something you think you can handle.
I've never done gears or lockers before but I have a couple of friends that have so we're going to be installing mine.
You have a Dana 50 up front...but for all sakes and purposes of this conversation...call it a Dana 60. Its a Dana 60 center section with Dana 44 outers. It will use the ring/pinion and all internal parts as if its a full blown Dana 60. The only change is outside of the knuckle U-joints, that is the smaller Dana 44 part od the thing. If you have a dually, you have a complete Dana 60 all the way out.
Look here to identify exactly what Dana model you have. You need to get the ID off the axle to find it in this list: http://www.louisvilleoffroad.com/pages.php?pageid=4
Model year '02's and up have a full D60 in the front, I think the only thing that differs is that we've got 30 spline axles compared to 35 spline, but I could be wrong.
I would think you would want a real locker in rear and a air or electric locker in front, a lot of people have problems with the air and electric lockers, might as well put a real long lasting locker in the rear, the front won't see much use and would wast a long time...
A Dana 50 cannot use a Dana 60 carrier or Dana 60 Ring and Pinion sets. The 50 and 60 look the same from the outside, and are the same from the u-joints out on the Ford. The 50 has smaller inner axle shafts, a smaller carrier and a smaller ring and pinion vs. the Dana 60. The Dana 60 has a 9.75" ring gear, is 35 spline, 12 ring gear bolts, 29 pinion splines, and has a pinion shaft diameter of 1.625". While the Dana 50 has a 9.0" ring gear, is 30 spline, 10 ring gear bolts, 26 pinion splines, and has a pinion shaft diameter of 1.375".
Some early '02s had the Dana 50 up front still. It was in '02 that they changed to the Dana 60......it seems that most '02s ended up with 60s. If you look on the axle and get the Bill Of Material you can find out for sure if it's a 50 or 60.
A automatic locker like a Detroit in the rear is nice, since their are no air lines or seals to fail, but present some handling quirks (especially in the rain and snow and while towing) that not everyone likes.
ARBs are strong units as well.....and if installed properly and maintained properly should provide trouble free use.
The better tires you get the less you will need a locker in the snow. Don't go running all season tires. Try coopers or blizzaks..I use the lockers for ice and off road working in the woods. On Ice I can get one side of the truck to grab usually and not get stuck. I plow in some terrible spots and many times have gotten myself off the road in a ditch. Never once with the lockers have I had to have assistance to get out just a shovel and sand...Love em Detroit rear absolutely no complaints and I drive around with 6k pounds in the bed. Lockright front works great and costs $300.00
I'm not one for all those air and electric stuff cause of break downs. I also don't like them cause they act like a spool when locked. Not good going down hill on snow or in the summer in the woods trying to turn...My opinion.
Have you done anything yet with changing the diffs? If you are still researching, I can give you some of my experiences as i have had a locker both in the front and the rear. Let me know.
