Wild Idea

Instead of putting Cleveland heads on a Winsor, how about putting Winsor heads on a 400. 351W intake with spacer.

Just a quick idea, are there any articles trying to do this??

With the news of Edelbrock halting the 351C head, it made me think of other ideas. We are a distributor for Pro Action Heads. I have used a number of SBF heads. Their top head for the Ford flows 315 CFM right out of the box.

Now I was imagining them on a 4.250" stroke 400.

Would a 400 intake mate to a Windsor head on an 'M' block?

There are alloy heads for a 351C which flow better than the Edelbrock. The AFD and CHI heads are almost bolt-on replacements for 'M' block heads. I am using a set of CHI-3V heads on my 400 with spacer plates and an old Edelbrock Streetmaster intake. I think that the AFD heads will fit without spacers.

What crank/rod/piston combo do you plan to use for the 4.25 stroker? Forged Eagle and SCAT cranks for a Windsor are reasonable, as are custom pistons, but custom rods can put a big dent into a budget.

BTW, I will be cruising in the Carribean for a couple of weeks, so if I don't make any posts, it is not due to lack of interest. They do have Internet Cafes on board.

So what does the CHI and AFD head cost?

My idea was to use the Eagle crankshaft.

AFD 230cc bare heads are $1600.00 delivered in the US.

CHI-3V bare heads are $1500.00 delivered to US.

The longest SBC rods are 6.25" or 6.35". Then you need a custom piston, or a 351M piston. How about the balance problem with a heavy piston and a Windsor crank?

My cheap thoughts were to use the 351M piston and a 6.25 rod. I have seen 6.250 and 6.300 in a "I" beam, but I havn't seen a 6.350" rod. With a 351M piston it comes out almost perfect. Very do able combo. Balancing might have to add heavy metal. The after market cranks seem to have more weight in the counter weights for the heavier forged pistons. Which would make it easier. Eagle does have some 351W that are internal balance, not sure on the 4.250"

You can get BBC rods up to 7" long. If you are going custom crank journal size doesn't matter for the rods or side clearance since you can get that to size. I would stay away from M pistons they are too heavy for high rpm above 6500.

The Forged Eagle Cranks are ground to accept SBC rods, so 6.3" is maximum with off-the-shelf rods.

The people at CHI are working on a set of adapters to mate their Hi-rise air gap intake to CHI-3V heads on a 351M/400. I may give them a try, if they are reasonably priced.

I used an Eagle 4" stroker for a 351W. No metal was added, instead we had to drill the weights out to balance the thing. The Ross pistons are fairly light. I had to use $1200 Oliver rods and those really could have stood to be .125"+ longer however, they didn't make anything for 2" or 2.1" journals that was longer.....I have 2" journals. The BB rods won't fit, too thick. Also, all this is nice on paper but there is one problem, the crankshaft timing gear. You need a Cleveland gear with the Windsor ID. The one gear is loose and the onther gear has the wrong offset. Back in the 1970's-1980's, Ford had some of these odd gears made. You may be able to find them still. My machinist had one, and only one. We used a W dampner and then had to space the pulleys. I have specs at the shop but that is an hour from me. Next time I'm up there I'll try to remember to grab them. In the long run, this whole mess would have been cheaper if I would have just bought a Dart block and used all the inexpensive Windsor parts. My motor is just about $15K now and a large part of that is the custom parts.....stuff that is off-the-shelf for Windsors.
