400 Engine Project- It's alive!!!

So far the engine has had a 25 min. break in. I started with the Weiand Intake.

1st. objective answered. After 25 min. with 10-40 oil, oil temp 225, and water temp at 200, we were able to idle at 900rpm and maintain 40-50# of oil pressure. According to many post, that is a big improvement. I am draining the oil, cleaning the filter, and will go back with a 10-30 oil and start doing some pulls. I will see how the oil pressure holds after the tests are all done.

Excellent news! The 351M/400 just needs some TLC when it comes to the oil system. Is there any way you can measure the oil pressure at some of the other locations in the system? Perhaps tap into some of the gallery plugs?

First 2 pulls starting point: 5000 RPM, 25 degree total advance.

423 & 425 Corrected Torque

359 & 365 Corrected HP

Best news, ex. temps are about 1200 degree.

Most low compression engines have a higher ex. temp. like 1400-1500.

More tommorrow

Can you monitor manifold vacuum during the pulls? I want to see the effect of the different manifolds.

Yes we can. As I finish a manifold, I will try to post a dyno sheet with such info.

Dan you have just earned yourself the title of Desktop Dyno Guru

Amazing accuracy on those predictions: 365 HP/421 TQ. But now just like on the strip you gotta back it up!

Let's see where your predictions come out on the other 2 manifolds.

I'm not done yet. Today I pull 5 more times. Now we went to 5500 RPM and bumped the timing to 30 total. Its has now developed a miss at 5500. I am installing another set of springs, after trying a different dist. parts. But I have increased to 370 HP and 430 torque, even with a miss.

Oil pressure is now 40# hot at idle with 10/30 oil.

Cranking pressure is #170

Ex. temps are below 1300. We'll have more updates when the new springs arrive. Sorry about the wait.

Here's a quiz: Anybody see something wrong with the picture???

The other predictions were not far off from this one, so they should be close, since there isn't too much difference between the manifolds.

It's a HEI ignition.

I'm actually surprised you're still pulling at 5,500rpm. I have the same static pressure with a lot more cam. I also run 38 total time but am experimenting with that. I've known 351c that were very sensitive to total time.

Are those stock exaust maniforlds?

The HP is peaking alittle over 5000. I like to pull just past the peak. I am betting the holley might pull a little higher. I want to keep adding ignition to also find max advance. I am betting we are close, it will be a hair over 30 total. I am hoping the "Squish" is helping us here. The headers are 4bdl. Cleveland from a car. Also we are using a 600 Edelbrock carb, and we are not pulling any vac. at all. We are switching to a MSD dist. The HEI had a poor machining on the housing and I didn't like the fit. We are returning it and have a MSD on it's way, should be here by Thursday.
