I would like to know if there is a spical tool to take off a gas filter. I have been trying to take off my gas filter off my 1999 Ford Ranger and just can not take it off. If there is a tool what does it cost?
Yes there is a tool. I dont know where to get it or what it costs though. We have them at work, and it a rather simple tool about 2.5-3 inces long and .5-1 in wide.
I just bought a set of about six differant size cheapo plastic ones for $8.00 at my local auto parts store. These were for my '93 F-150. They did show me a few other tools so make sure you are getting the right one for your application.
Having fixed botched fuel filter jobs from other so called mechanics, I would say make sure you get the metal (X) one from KD Tools sold at NAPA. Make sure you insert the tool all the way until you feel the click. You might have to rotate the tool slightly and push the line in. Do not force anything! If you are still having trouble take it to a Ford dealer.

Is there any way to get the fuel filter off without the tool?
I have a friend that knows everything and he say you do not need the tool. I say you do. Who is right?
Yes, it is possible to get it off without the tool (I think some like to use needle nose pliers) but you also run a greater risk of damaging the connection. If you plan to change filters on the truck yourself, just get the tool.

I do most of the work on my truck that I can do? So yes I will get the tool to do the job right. I do not belive in doing a job half ***.
