70 MPH howling noise

Hey Guys,
This one has me stumped. 91 3.0 ext 185k. I get a howling noise at around 65-70 mph in drive and overdrive. New tires, brakes and alignment. The van runs good and shifts perfect, it just seems to have a continuous howl coming from around the engine/trans cover at around 65mph and up. I dont have any leaks or slippage. I put on an auxilliary trans cooler and that did clear up the trans puking fluid out the front seal area on long trips. The trans is a rebuilt unit from the previous owner and I replaced the transfilter and fluid just to be sure. It never did this before. It will make this noise when I am under power and almost go away when I let off the gas. It comes in at 65 mph in both drive and overdrive and does not make the sound when I just rev the engine to the corresponding rpm in neutral. I thought it was a tire balance issue ,but that was eliminated when I replaced the tires.

Any suggestions would be a great help...Thanks

What is the condition of your exhaust, cat, and headers. Just a thought is that howling that you hear is from an exhaust leak. Without hearing it, it is difficult to diagnose.

Get it up to speed and then put it in neutral and coast down the road at that speed see if the noise stops. If it does not stop I would start to check wheel bearings. Also check rear end for grease level they can make some strange noises.

Ours howels at any speed - it is because the van is so heavy (but within spec for the tires) - all wheel bearings have been checked &/or replaced. If you have new tires, and know you have good wheel bearings, it might be just the nature of the tires to howel. I know the old Goodyear Aquatreads really howeled if you went 65+. Your other choice is a truck tire - and with the Aerostar's suspension being what it is, I would not recomend it for the sake of your passengers.

Good Luck!

The cats are good and the muffler and tailpipe are new 2 months ago. I will give the rolling 65 mph check a try.

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to correct the axle ring gear ratio from 4.00:1 to 4.10:1.

ISSUE:
Some vehicles may exhibit a rear axle "whine" or "howl" noise. This noise may be audible during light throttle at speeds between 56-72 km/h (35-45 mph) or at highway speeds during acceleration or deceleration. This may be due to the ring and pinion gear set.

ACTION:
Select the appropriate ring and pinion set from the Parts Block listed below and replace the ring and pinion set.

check the driveline U joints, about time they go out, 185k
and spline shaft into tranny for wear
also check pinion shaft on rear end for wear, noise will carry into engine/tranny area up drive shaft.

if the noise gose away when you let off the pedal I would check the rear end. they have a tendency to make a hauling noise when they are going out or low on gear oil. then almost go away when you let off the pedal.
