Another Tow/Haul question ??

I have '03 SC short bed 6.0L F250 which I really really love! I have only put 9K miles on it and it gets solid 17mpg when hauling air. The only serious irritation is the gosh awful funky stink on start up! My question is about tow haul. Does this just change shift points or really lock out OD? Mine will occasionally drop into OD even with 7 tons of backhoe and trailer behind, and on tow/haul of course. It does this trick when pulling and breathing easy on flats or slight downgrades and on cruise, but it does not seem to do it consistently under the same conditions. This makes me nervous as I do not want to tear up the tranny. Any thoughts on this ? thanks, wellmo2

as for the smell. I see your from ohio, try looking for a fuel supplier who carries biodiesel at 2% this helps a lot with the smell and also gives some more power .
I believe the tow haul just changes the shift points but you sure have a good load on it (14000 lbs). Is the trailer included in your weight? I would give a call to your dealer and just ask about it to be sure.

OD is not locked out with T/H, if the computer determines the engine can provide sufficient torque to maintain speed at a given load it will shift into OD regardless. These transmissions are not 4R100's, and have plenty of sufficient clutch capacity (assuming the vehicle is stock) to tow any load that the vehicle is capable of carrying, in Overdrive. However, hauling loads of such weight, I would recommend an aftermarket transmission temperature gauge *just 'cause*; the stock gauges are a joke.

to avoid the in cab funky smell make sure you have the fan off and the air selector on off. that way nothing gets sucked into the cab

I've been told that our tranny is fully rated to approx 850 ft/lbs. This by 2 different ford people. As for the tow haul, the idea is to keep the torque converter locked up as much as possible. This will still allow all forward gears.

If you are referriing to 850 ft/lbs at the flywheel, that number sounds about right (850 might be pushing your luck a tad bit without proper transmission tuning, however). As for 850ft/lbs at the wheels, count your blessings if it lives through more than 10 full-throttle runs.

There was another thread on here a while back that gave a good in depth explanation about the tow/haul feature and keeping the engine RPMs to the point of best HP/torgue range. Might want to search it, or maybe someone will provide a link.
