My l-6 makes alot of noise when the engine is cold. After it warms up it runs great. It has 137,000 miles and my mechanic told me that the 300 has a tendancy to be loud when cold .He told me it is nothing to worry about. Is this common for the 300?
Is it knocking when you put a load on it cold? And then goes away after it's warm? If this is the case, it is piston slap, caused by loose fitting pistons in the cylinder bores. This means you have some wear in the engine, but I have run engines a long time like this with no trouble.
Loud is not "normal" on any engine. It may be just a sign that your engine is beginning to show its age. Beside the piston slap mentioned above, it could be a failing lifter that is taking a while to pump up. The slap is more of a lower internal knocking sound, while the lifter will sound more like a tapping noise and sounds almost like it is coming out of the top of the heads. As was mentioned, you can usually drive for a long time until the problem gets worse. At your mileage, you're on borrowed time for tearing down the engine for an overhaul.
The noise started the first time i changed the oil after buying the truck. I use 10w30 with a motorcraft filter. Would changing the weight
to a heavier weight help?
You can experiment around with heavier oils and additives, but it doesn't change the fact that the engine is probably a little loose, and as long as it runs good, I wouldn't worry about it. Have you driven it enough yet to see how much oil it uses? This would be a good indicator too, as to the condition of the engine.
yeh,I have put 6,000 miles on it. I changed the oil at every 3,000. I haven't had to add any oil between changes and the motor doesn't smoke. It runs great even when its cold.It just sounds loud for the first mile that I drive it. Thats why it bothers. If the truck ran like a piece of junk I would go ahead and rebuild. Maybe I'm just over reacting. It may be something that only i notice.
The ford I-6 has a problem with cracked exshaust manifolds....there so long.Thats why when its cold its louder then when it heats up it expands and closes up and you can't hear it so much. They crack in middle under carb.Off to boneyard.
you said it started to be noisy after you changed the oil after buyin it? The same thing happened to my 84 f 150 xlt w/ 302 2 bbl. I noticed a lot of sludge after changing it and soon after, it started nocking real bad. Bein a 16 year old kid I just drove it and it got worse. A few months later I went muddin and it got stuck bad and when i got unstuck and was drivin home it knocked real real bad and shook when it was lugging, like when it would shift into 3rd at a low speed. I knew what was wrong-the main bearings. so i started savin up my cash from my summer job as a truck mechanic and swapped it out for a rebuilt long block 302 bored out .030 over with a 470 lift crane. Costed bout 875 with tax. So far its been a great motor and i aint had no problems, and i run synthetic in it because its a new motor and i plan to run synthetic forever in it. You probably aint got the same problem i did but this is just my 2 cents, comin from a 17 year old kid who loves Fords and would rather push a Ford than drive a chevy.
You know since I read this happened right after a oil change,I payed more attention to 1st post. The crankcase could have been full of STP/motor honey when you bought it?Then when you changed oil it started knocking.Sorry!! But things happen. If this is the case.Which I hope it isn't.
hey redneckdiesel, where ya from, I'm seventeen as well and own a 93 4x4 I-6. Just thought maybe we could talk or something...these rice burners don't understand me around here lol
