I am looking at installing a couple of 10's and an external amp in my 96 F150 single cab. I found a good deal on a couple of Alpine 10's at crutchfield.com for $89. Heres the link. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-90I8DoN...0&I=500SWE1041
I think they would be good, but I am having trouble picking out what type of Amp I would need to run them off of. I have been reading up, and I have heard mono or multi-channel amps. I dont want to pay a lot for my amp, hopefully under $100. So what kind of amp should I get? Heres one I am currently looking at. http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?...50&svbname=309
Think that would push the subs enough? Or would it be overkill? Any input will be greatly appreciated!
thats only a 400 watt amp. those 10's handle 600 each. I'd get this amp http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?...ore=&catid=306
its 600 watts, has a hi/lo crossover network, and bass boost.
also its only 60 bucks, and whatever the shipping and handling.
The amp you are looking at looks good to me. Bridging the 4 channel amp down to 2 channels gives you 200Wx2 and that is exactly what your subs are designed to handle (RMS). Don't bother looking at Max power rating as they are not very useful past a marketing standpoint. Also, IMHO Clarion is a much better brand then Legacy. I have a 200W Clarion amp and a 12" Kenwood sub in my Aerostar, and it provides more then enough bass for my tastes.
At the price range you're in, it's a little tricky. I don't think that you're going to get an amp that will really deliver a couple of hundred watts into each sub. The Clarion amp that you chose is the best between it and the "Legacy" amplifier - price alone is a clue-in on that one. The Clarion amp is actually going to give you 100 watts into each sub - the 200 watts per channel rating is into a two ohm load and your subs will be 4 ohm. Your other option is to look for a mono amplifier that is 2 ohm stable for more power. However, more power in a quality amp is very difficult in this price range. I'd stick with the Clarion for now and, if you feel that you need more power in the future, you can upgrade later (200 watts for subs is still a lot). If you upgrade in the future, look for a mono amplifier, such as a class 'D' or 'H', that's designed for driving a two ohm subwoofer load.
IMO Clarion is a better bet. Legacy doesn't have a good reputation with me, I've had several friends use them, and the sound quality is horrible, their specs are way off, and in one of my friend's case, the amp caught on fire. I didn't know it was possible for an amp to catch on fire, but it did. I'd go for either Clarion or maybe even Kole Audio. I don't know much about Logic Soundlabs' amps, but I have one of their subs, and I was actually surprised at how good it sounds.. I bought it off of my friend for $20, and he paid $60 for it or something like that.
ok nevermind the legacy. get this http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?...ore=&catid=306
its a sony Xplod
500W x 1 Maximum Power
300 Watts x 1 RMS Power
400 Watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms
200 Watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms
Class D design
Variable low-pass crossover (50 - 300Hz @ 12 dB per octave)
Variable bass boost (0 - 10 dB @ 40 Hz)
Built In Crossover
Subsonic filter
its 125 bucks.
But Sony has gone down IMO, it seems like they're getting cheaper and cheaper in quality. But I do think the Sony is going to be better than Legacy/ Pyramid, or Pyle.
I've never liked Sony. Buddy of mine used to have to swap his HU out every 6months(warranty) because the buttons kept falling off. This was back in early 90s.
I've got a Clarion HU, 5yrs old and no problems. Got a Clarion eq I bought used off of ebay. I've had it 2yrs and don't know how long it had been used b4 I got it. The rest of my stuff is cheap (SPL by Power Acoustic)but sounds decent.
Do you like SPL? I got close to buying an amp from them just to see what it was like, I looked at the papers on it, and seemed to have decent stats. I've wanted to start a new thread, asking if anybody has heard of some brands, but I then forgot the name of the brands. There was SPL, Volfenhaag or something like that, Kole Audio (I've heard of them), and a few others. Has anybody heard these before?
If you go the 2 ohm route, Just buy the 1021 which is a 2 Ohm speaker. I have heard these with a 150 amp @1% THD and they sounded good.
Just be sure to read the rated amps compared to voltages 12 volt/14.4 and so on. Save up a few more dollars and buy a little better amp will be money well spent.
Ive used sony amps, subs, and HU's all have been very good and their pretty high quality. I havent had any trouble with mine dying, but i think that they were quite junky back some time ago. I've also had good luck with blaupunkt, but it seems like they are fading out of the market. Try not to get a piece of crap because youll regret it later. Good luck hunting.

I looked at all the specs on the cheap stuff and Power Acoustic seemed to be the best. The SPL stuff is a few $ cheaper w/ the same specs.. I've got the 3way 5x7s in the door and back panels, w/ a 600w 4ch pushing them. I've got 2 10s on a 1200w 2 ch.
I bought the 10s b/c specs called for .5 cf for a sealed box. Yeah right, it sounds good about 1/2 volume. Anything over that just loses bass. I'm going to build a new box soon, give each sub about 1 cf.
I think I paid about $85 for the 10s online, Then I found out a guy I work w/ had access to a wholesaler and he got me both sets of 5x7s for $50, and both amps for about $230. Also got me a 4 ga wiring kit for $25.
