brake job gone wrong

i did the front brakes today on my 75 and i used new calipers and accel pads but on the outer pad there is 1/8'' of room between the pad and the disc should i have pushed the caliper back until the pad touched the disc the piston is still in the full compressed position i don't know what happened i have not had this happen before

So you are saying when you push on the brake pedal the caliper piston won't move the pad towards the rotor ?

The outside pad stays put... but floats
When the pedal is pushed:
The inside pad is pushed by the caliper piston pushes against inner pad to touch the rotor.
Once the pedal is released, the pad/piston backs off about 1mm.

I suspect you don't have it together yet... when you go to put the keepers back in, the outside of the caliper will compress back to the rotor, and then you will need to bleed the brakes, which will hold the pad to the face of the rotor.

Dennis is right, the outside pad is the one that floats, the inside pad is the one that receives all the pressure, which is why it is bigger.

You'll just have to pump the brakes a few times after bleeding them to set the caliper where it needs to be. This is quite normal.
