Hello,
I am looking for non-working brake light suggestions. I have replaced the master cylinder, brake light switch, fuse, and light bulbs. I have working tail
lights and turn signals. Any sugestions?
Thanks, James Q
Have you tried to jump the brake light switxch? Take the 2 wires off it and connect together. They should light up. if so, the brake light switch is bad. If not, there's a break in the wires somewhere or the signal light switch under the steering wheel is bad. They route the brake lights thru this for some reason. Test the B/light sw. wires with a test light, you should have power in one of the 2 wires.
Hi Barry,
I did jump the wires on the switch and did not get any lights. The turn signals work.
Does this eliminate the switch under the steering wheel?
Thanks, James Q
Been some time since worked on my 65 brake system. Wonder if can test circuit by removing the 2 wires from the brake switch, assuming pressure type, and while one presses brake pedal can someone test across the switch. Since mentioned also replacing M/C wonder if air pocket not allowing required pressure to activate switch. At least determine if switch is faulty and start from there.

I made a litlle drawing for future reference if I ever needed it, if My drawing is incorrect please let me know I would hate to have led someone astray. anyway I had the same problem and it was my connections under the bed back by the rearend. there should be 3 wires which split into 4 (2 to each side) mine were all cracked and not connecting good. once I replaced all of them it all works flawless. you might try messing with this area.Brake diagram between axle and bumper
I ran into this recently and it was a bad ground at the rear of the truck in addition to a poor connection at the fuse box. A bad ground can cause all sorts of strange symptoms!!
My brake lights work even with the switch off. The air void in the Master Cylinder was a real pain in the A** for me. Dave, where were you when I was slashing my wrists over this problem. Redid the whole wiring harness from the bed back without success, then a very wise man suggested I try to bleed fluid at the switch. BINGO!
Hello all,
Thanks for the suggestions! Voodoosurfer, I could not open the link you posted. The air pocket below the switch sounds like a possibility as well. Where is the ground strap at the rear of the truck?
Thanks again, James Q
Behind the rear lamps you'll see a ground wire going to the body. Clean where they attach and also make up a ground wire to connect to the frame. It won't hurt to do this even if it's not the problem.
Hello Barry,
I looked under my truck and all I see is the rear light harnesses. I don't see any grounds at all. Could I ground from the lamp assemblies to the frame? This is a stepside truck. Also, do my working turn signals rule out the switch under the steering wheel being bad?
Thanks for all your help, James Q
No it doesn't rule out it being bad. Take the tail lamps off the brackets and clean where they mount. Make sure they're nor rusty inside. You may have to hook a ground from the body to frame. Did you try bleeding the air out at the master cyl?
