Hey guys,
I've got a clunk or thump in my 90 F150 SC with 4.9L and E4OD whenever I put it in reverse or drive. Sounds kinda like u-joints, but there's no slop apparent when I get under there and muscle the driveshaft around. I've read about greasing a slip yoke to make a clunky driveline quiet down. Okay, I'll try anything once, but where and what is the slip yoke and how do I get it off to grease it? My truck has a two-piece driveshaft, with the hanger joint half-way in between.
Coming out of the back of that center bearing is a splined shaft which directly inserts into the cylindrical part of that slip yoke. A zerk fitting is located on the circumference of the cylinder, about three inches rearward toward the U-joint.
Check those U-joints again, though. Sure sounds like them to me.

Make sure when you check the u-jonts the truck is in neutral without the e brake (block the tire)and on flat ground. If it is in park there is to much tension to properly check them. You can also check the slip yoke the same as the u joints if it has play lubing it wont help much.If it is wore out the spline on the shaft probably is too. It would also be a good idea to check the play in the rearend while your down there.
Good luck.
