Smile speedometer/rear abs problem

Good morning everybody--first thanks for the help with the glowplugs on my truck. They were really easy to replace and it starts great now.
My next problem--my speedometer jumps, wiggles and vibrates all over the place--some of the time. Some of the time it just lays there looking dead. Then it will work fine for awhile. It seems to work most of the time if there is water or snow on the road. It seems to jump whenever you hit cracks in the pavement. My "Rear ABS" light is on as well. Sometime when I apply the breaks i can feel my ABS kicking in and i feel like i'm not going to stop. I replaced the rear abs sensor with one from O'reillys--not the stock motorcraft one--and it didn't seem to help. Any help would be appreciated--this is a 92 f250 diesel 4x4
thanks orren

I would check the wiring on the sender in the pumkin, you must have a manual trans. If you had an auto you would have many more problems.

thanks for the info--you are right-- a 5 speed --It's a pain in the butt with out the cruise control. Is there any way to bypass the whole contraption? It wouldn't hurt my feelings to do away with ABS. By wiring, do you mean the wires to the ABS sensor on the pumpkin? That was my thought too since it seems to happen when the going gets a little rough. How would you go about locating a bad wire on this beast? Thanks for the assistance--orren

I do not believe there is bypass availability as too many things require the input from the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). You may have to just slide under and start looking for bad wires at the pumkin and work forward. One other area may be the back of the instrument cluster as connections and grounds may be loose. If you wish remove the VSS and check the ohm reading between the pins 2500 or more ok, less than 2500 ohms replace the VSS.

Thanks for the information--what is the Variable Speed Sensor and where is it located? Is it the same as the Rear ABS sensor? I don't mean to be dumb here!

Yes the (VSS) vehicle speed sensor is the same as the (DSS) differential speed sensor and RABs sensor, depends on what book you read. Speedo and RABs both use the info in their systems.
