With the torqushift auto, it requires Mercon SP ATF found at your local Ford dealer.
This is per Ford:
MERCON, MERCON V and MERCON SP are not interchangeable.
DO NOT mix MERCON, MERCON V and MERCON SP. Use of dual usage fluids in an automatic transmission application requiring MERCON SP may cause transmission damage. Use of a transmission fluid other than the recommended fluid may cause transmission damage.

What are you guys paying the dealer for flushing the system and change the filter and also to the guys changing the filter and just draining the pan How many Qts are you finding it takes to fill at 5.00 a Qt i dont wanna buy 12 or so and only use 7or8 and in another 30,000 its at the auto parts store on the corner for 2.25
I have the Torqshift transmission and It took mine 10.5 qts of Mercon SP. You must use Mercon SP as all Mercon fluids are not compatible with each other. Prepare to spend $4.50 per quart so you may want to sit down when you order the stuff from the Motorcraft parts counter man.
I also changed both filters FT-144 and FT-145 (transmission pan filter and auxiliary in-line filter located in front of the right front tire). The pan gasket is re-useable.
I changed mine at 11k miles because I didn't like the way it shifted from P-->R and D-->R. It also upshifted slow and slushy when cold. It shifts perfectly right now. Get this, I have to take it in to get 04B24 Transmission reverse planet replacement now.
you do know that only the machine can get the fluid out of th converter no drain,so you will be leaving the old fluid in to mix with the old, yhats like changing your fluid and not the filter.

Well, no, it's not like changing the fluid and not the filter. The filter catches the particles and you want to get that out of there on schedule.... even if you're only changing half the fluid. Presumably the fluid that is left in there is actually pretty clean (because of the filter) but I suppose you could worry about its lubricating properties being diminished. Still, it's better to change half the fluid and the filter than none of it.
And not "only the machine" can get virtually all of the fluid out. The transmission itself has a pump in it that can get all the fluid out of the converter and the nooks and crannies. Search any number of forums around here for the instructions on how to do that by unhooking a cooler return line. That's the method I use and it's pretty straightforward.
dont you have to start the engine to work the pump, ande then it would be running the trans dry. I may be wrong but that is what I thought about the cooler line trick.
I only pump out a quart at a time and then refill. Keep doing this until you have put in the total capacity. You need someone to start the engine and shut it off between quarts.
