Tranny fluid

I just put a rebuilt tranny in my 74 pickup. It has a C6, but I don't know the amount of fluid it will take to fill it up. Any clues?

about 22 quarts I believe, if converter new and dry it might be more, dump in 8 qts, see if it shows on stick, if not 3 more at a time untilit hits the full mark not over filling, start up and let oil pump through tranny, bleed air out of tranny by putting it in low and reverse back and forth holding the brake if it moves you are getting close, let it warm up a bit and recheck if it dont move shut it down check and add more oil untill it will move, check when hot fill to safe operating range and drive it check for leaks daily for a while and recheck fluid level add as needed, record amount used.

Transmission questions like this should be posted in the transmission forum.

Thanks shafer.
I figured a fairly simple spec question would probably be able to be answered here.

If I were needing to know how much engine oil it takes, should that be asked in my specific engine's forum?

Btw, Welcome to FTE!

Yes in the engine it pertains to

This forum is way too busy to be posting Systems Specific type questions.
Doing so Pushes the the REAL: 73-79 specific threads to the next page.
We have Thousands of members & thousands of hits & Posts a day.

But, It's really an easy system.

If the C6 was put in trucks for 16 years how does that make it a
73-79 Truck SPECIFIC question.

Have you read the READ FIRST: threads attached to the top of this forum ?

I just had my C-6 rebuilt, it is going in a 1978 F-150 4X4. It has the deeper pan like you find in the big mercurys of the 70's, the transmission shop told me to start out with 6 qts. I plan on getting a second opinion.

Don't be offended by Dennis, after all look at that mug, anybody with that fat face has to be about 4 foot 8 inches and about 300lbs.

Just kidding, Dennis has set me straight before and we need people like him to keep this site on the net for us.

Dennis, don't cast your wrath on me.

I just put my trans in and I put one quart in the torque converter (3500 stall) and six in the tranny after I started it I add one more, then after it was fully warm I had to add one more. That makes a total of nine.

according to my Haynes manual,in 74 the 2wd C6 took 28 Pints, 4WD took 26.5 Pints. I just changed the fluid in my 79, including the TC and it took about 13 quarts to refill it.

Well I meant to type 9 qts, not pts.
I should have taken typing in school.
