looking for 460......

I'm in the market for a good, rebuildable 460 for my project truck. I plan on getting into the high power range, and I was wondering if there was a certain year or years that I should be looking for in particular (i.e. stronger blocks or other components that will be better for high power).

460 blocks

i dont think you will have a problem with any block out of a truck, they have stronger connecting rod bolts .these blocks are all 2 bolt main and hold up well for limited rpms(5500)i read an article a while ago where they told a 460 out of a van and bored it out 40 over and had all the bottom end prep work done proper(older timing set 0 degree)high lift cam with lots of duration.flat top pistons.for the heads they went with an early version of 77cc heads and ported them out and installed chevy style rocker studs and adjustable rockers.high rise intake manifold,850 dp holley and headers.this was a low budget build and would not be hard to duplicate.they pulled 507 hp and 533 lbft on the dyno. pretty impressive eh!you should be able to find a block for a few hundred dollars heads might be harder to find but worth the search .the secret is in the head work those exhaust ports need alot of work.headers are a must and dont forget a big motor needs a really big cam and carb(750dp or 850dp).prep work cannot be skimped on.this motor should be able to make you smile everytime you press the go pedal.hope this helps

My understanding is the C9 would be the best choice then the D1. I think the D9 will have a different crank in it than the pre78 blocks. Meaning you can not install a pre78 crank inot a 79 block because the counter weights are to big and will hit the bottom of the cylinder skirts. But double check on that. As for the D9 block being stronger I have no clue.

C9, D1 no differnece other than deck hieght. I prefer the D1 over the C9 because of this. It allows you to square the block up where the C9 does not. Stay away from the D2 heads though. DOVE heads and earlier are small chamber and for street use you will need to run dished pistons. D3 heads you can run flat tops. In either case you need to shoot for zero deck hieght to control detenation.

If you are looking for a place to start a build, I have a garage full of big block stuff for sale. I'm in Tulsa, OK and the parts are over in Stillwater. A few blocks, 429 cranks, pullies, flexplates, stock intakes, etc. The whole truck load for $250.

I love it when I learn something new. I have a 71 block and it's good to know it may be better than the C9 block or atleast just as good.

This keeps getting better. Now I will cross my fingers and hope my buddy really did find me a PI 460 so I can snag the heads from it. I may get this thing for free.

Silver, I may get back to you on that. Right now I'm just doing research on a project I might start this spring. Have to make room in the garage and get the IRS $$ first............
