Hello everyone. I have been browsing for a while and never needed advice until now. I have a 79 f-150 lariat 4wd with a 1971 429 .
It has a edelbrock performer rpm intake, holley 750, headers, MSD 6a ign, Dove heads and a lunati bracket cam.
I just upgraded my water pump to a weiand aluminum and my fuel pump to an edelbrock 110gph.
well after doing this it will not run properly, it backfires through the carb and will die in the street and shut off even after it is warm. I thought it must be the fuel pump so I put my original carter back on and changed the in line fuel filter but it still did not help. I am lost. Could I have moved the timing chain by changing the fuel pump? I am open to suggestions. I am going to put new plugs, rotor and cap on today. Thanks
No it is a lunati bracket cam. I think the problem was a loose distributor. I am going to purchase a timing light now. Do i need to disconnect anything in order to get an accurate read? I moved the distibutor and it started running real smooth.
Sounds like loose dist. Set your base idle timing with the vacume unhooked from dist. With an engine built like yours however I would run about 32 deg total timing at 2800 RPM. This should be a good starting point. Do easily set it at this you will need a timing light with adjustable dial on it. Turn that to 32 degrees and then run the engine at 2800 RPM. Turn the dist until the timing mark is set on the 0 degree mark on balancer. You should see a noticeable improvement in performance. You can retard or advance the timing until you get spark knock or it wont start when hot.
Oh yea with your DOVE heads premium fuel may be required if you set the timing to its optimal point. Your new water pump should help cool the engine which will help spark knock
Yes there is that much difference. The year of the engine determines timing requirements, however since this engine has a NON-STOCK camshaft that timing setting is useless. At 600 RPM depending on the size of the cam it may hardly idle at all. What size cam do you have?
I run my 69 429 at 6* due to the elevation here of about 3000 ft ASL.
The 71 429 (375 hp 4v) sets at 10* BTC
Now you see why we suggest to users who are building a 460 to buy the 68-71 Timing gears & chain due to the fact that it doesn't have the built-in 8* retard gear like the
smog 460's
One of the biggest problems happen when people who do the tune-up, they set the carb first instead of the mechanical parts.(ie: Points,Static Timing, vacuum advance disconnect)
This thread will be moved to the 385 engine series forum
