92 Ranger 4x4 4.0 auto and yesterday my son said it started missing real bad when he is getting on the interstate and this morning when he first took off the thing wouldn't get above 35 mph and was missing real bad but once he drove it about 5 miles it ran better but still misses under acceleration. It also has always pinged real bad. He changed the fuel filter yesterday but no help. The plugs were replaced about 4000 miles ago. He's bringing it over tonight so I can pull the codes and I was wondering if someone could tell me some other things to check.

Thanks
I think you're on the right track on scanning the codes. Usually pining means that the motor is running too lean.
After reading some of the posts on here, I had my son clean the mass air and after a brief test drive he said it was fixed. I guess the real test will be when he gets out of school and hits the interstate.
