FE is a type of engine stands for Ford/Edsel I have been told, but have no idea really Its just a family of engines from 330-428. There is no way to tell a 360 from 390 without tearing down the engine.
Thanks again all for you helpfull input. I was just over at the FE section and the only way to tell the differance between the 360 and the 390 is by the stroke. I will check the diference in the grill and i do have round head lights on mine
fe stands for ford engine one other way to possibly tell the engine sive is by the casting number on the block or heads. a true 250 4x4 should be a highboy which has a divorced (seperate) transfer case mounted about the back of the cab. the frame on a highboy is the same width at the back as it is at the front the other frames get wider towards the back. to my knowledge all 250 4x4s were highboys up until 77.5 when the frame was changed. a highboy will sit noticably taller than a 2wd the post 77.5 trucks were the same height as a 2wd the highboy will also hve a lift block between the springs and axle on the back axle
Using the casting numbers off the block will not tell you what is inside, you will need to know at least the stroke of the crank, then to truly determine CID, you would also need the bore of the cylinders (put that requires tear down)... The FE or Ford/Edsel motor first saw use in the car line of 1958 and then was put into trucks starting in 65. They were used in the truck line through 76 and have a big brother in the big truck line (over f350), an FT.
The bed is a 73 to 77.5. Those trucks had a round gas filler hole with no door. They never put a rear tank in the 73-77.5 F-250 because they had the narrow frame. You can also tell around what year the truck is by looking at the grill, if it is the original one. In 73-77.5 they had round headlights and in 77.5-79 they had square lights. The 73-75 grills are also a little different then the 76-77.5 you can look at pictures of them on the internet to see the difference, its kind of hard for me to explain what it is.
Regarding the headlight thing it goes like this. 79 are square. 78 are square except for the "Custom" trim level, they are round. (Custom is the lowest most basic trim level). 77's were all round. Anyways, thats almost all I know. -Dale
casting numbers can narrow it down plus it tells u if that is the original engine and cleaning off a little dirt and grease is alot less work than pulling an engine. and oh the highboy beds had gas tank holes but were covered with a special plug. why would ford make any more molds than they had to when they could drill the holes a 1/2" closer and bolt it on
Thanks again everyone for their input. My next question i want to tune it up and was wondering if all the parts are the same between a 360 & 390.... points, condensor, rotor, plugs, wires, cap
yes they will work i had the same problem with my 76 highboy all the ignition parts will interchange i just told the parts store it was a 390 (wishfull thinking lol)
