i just recently purchased a 74 f250 4x4 with a 390. so i am told by the seller but all the pics i have seen the emblems are on the fenders and on mine they are above the fender on the piece the is inbetween the hood and the wind shield. all the info tags are missing from the door and or door pillar. so was just wondering maybe the cab has been changed or something along the lines. hope this helps.
Thanks
Danny

in 77 they moved the emblems from the fenders to the cowl. 1974 would have the emblems on the fenders from the factory. The 74 F-250 4x4's also had gas tank in the cab on most of them.
Thanks for the quick replays... so it will be safe to say that the cab has been changed. Is there any other places i could look for to get some info on my truck maybe a hidden vin number some where? Or any other tell tale signs that its a 74
Thanks again
now the truck you bought has the emblems on the cowl or fender?? There is supposedly a VIN stamped in the top of the pass frame rail near the rear of the cab. The only way to see it is to remove body. There were also VIN tags stuck to the front of bed and under the hood on the cowl?? check these places. What kind of front axle does it have? If its closed knuckle drum brake it is mostly likely a real 74 F-250 4x4
The emblems are on the cowl. I will check those places for the vin tags. As to the axles i am clueless i am new to ford f series pick ups but i will check and see if it is closed with drum brakes. Thanks again for all your help.... just trying to figure out what i have or what i dont have. Also on the bed on drivers side there is a cut out for what looks like to be for a second gas tank?? and on pass. side there is a what looks like to be a some sort of storage compartment with a door on it.
the pass side box is an optional toolbox. these have a habit of rusting out, however if yours is not its a nice option. the second gas door is a possibility. front or rear of wheelwell? does it have a door? what shape is the cut out?
the hindges on the box are weak but it dosent look like its in bad shape over all and as for the possible second gas tank its behind the wheel well and there is no door i was covered up with bondo but i did craw underneath and looks like its a round cut out.

I was under the impression that they moved to the frame mounted tanks for 73 and on, that's why they widened the distance between the rails. I am not too familiar with the 73+ trucks, but does your VIN tag have a "color" code and does it match? You might also want to check out your "390" as the 4x's came with 360's. You cannot tell them apart from the outside (stop by the FE motor forum)..
Mike G you are correct that they widened the frame rails on all but F-250/350 4x4's and F-350 Super Camper Specials. Most of these trucks that I have seen had in cab tanks. The rest mostly had under bed tanks, but the in cab tank was an option for more fuel capacity.
Mike, all the id plates are gone so i looked up the vin. that is on the title and it came up with a
74 f250 4x4 pick up
360 ci 2bbl
assembled in mahwak
What does FE stand for? when you said to check out the FE motor forum
Is there a way to tell if its a 360 or a 390 that i have? Also i called the guy that i bought the truck from and he did say that the bed was changed but didnt know about the cab.
The bed is a 73 to 77.5. Those trucks had a round gas filler hole with no door. They never put a rear tank in the 73-77.5 F-250 because they had the narrow frame. You can also tell around what year the truck is by looking at the grill, if it is the original one. In 73-77.5 they had round headlights and in 77.5-79 they had square lights. The 73-75 grills are also a little different then the 76-77.5 you can look at pictures of them on the internet to see the difference, its kind of hard for me to explain what it is.
