Has anyone put a Leafs prung D44 under a F150?
I am thinking about putting my 3/4 ton running gear and a Crew cab on a regular cab longed F150 frame...
I'm in about the same boat.'78F150 4X4 reg cab with coils dbl shocks.I found and bought '78 F150 4X4 supercab, all supercab F150's '78 are leaf spring mount.I've found massive differences.Different steering box and tie rod links. Also the two mount totally different.I'm not sure, but think the super cab may be a dana 50 or 60.I myself want to go on with the up grade, but I dont want to have to drill any extra holes in the frame to weaken it.Looking into weld on brackets along with doing an up grade on the steering box.Not sure where to look at this time. Its not a bolt on conversion.
Are leaf springs better? I have seen a few very modified trucks that switched from leaf to coil as well as the jeep wrangler switched from leaf to coil a few years back.
Coil springs flex better than coils honestly don't think its worth converting to leafs....supercab uses a d44hd its a heavy duty version of te 1/2 ton, basically set up for the leaf springs, easy conversion to 8 lug if ya go d60 in the rear, just a matter of swappin outcaliper mounts spindles and rotors and calipers, and of course brake lines.
My two cents, not worth the effort. Coils are a better suspension, turning angles are way better. If stength is a problem you can tuffen up your 44. Look at the "new technology" in the 05 super duty, back to coils and for good reason. Its also cheaper to re-spring, ie lift. just my opinion. -Dale
I changed out a 78 bronco to leaf spring a wail back. here is what i did i cut the inner section of the frames, cross members and all off of both trucks (donor was a 78 f250 4x4). and welded the inner 250 frame to the bronco. you can not just add mount to the front of the frame due to the fact that a 250 has a frame doubler to handle the weight of the truck. the 1/2 tons frames are design to hold the weight on the coil tower. if you don't double the frame it will brake the first time you hit hard on the front.
