I took my truck to Firestone because I had a $25.00 coupon for an inspection and seeing as it ran out last November I figured it was due. I guess the idiot before me ripped out everything that has to do with emissions . So I got the report back and my HC levels were 1046 when the max was 166. They told me a few things to hook up or replace to help with emissions. EGR, TAC, PVC, and vacuum lines were among these. The vacuum lines I am familiar with and can refer to the manual to hook up, but for the other things, I don't even know what those abbreviations stand for! I want to do as much as I can to fix/hook everything up before taking it to another shop for a tune-up. I have 15 days(8 left) to go back for a free inspection. I really want to pass considering it will cost me 40 bucks next time if I fail again. I know the odds of it all coming together within that time period are slim but any and all help is appreciated. Thanks again.
EGR=Exhaust Gas Recirculation, PCV=positive Crankcase Vacuum
EGR usually runs from the exhaust manifold back to the intake. On my '92 351W, it's on the front passenger side of the engine.
PCV valve is usually plugged into a grommet on the valve cover. In my case, passenger side in the back.
Both of these parts are easy to change and available at AutoZone or O'Reilly.
No idea on the TAC. Not familiar with that one.
I can relate on the emissions testing woes. I live on Galveston County and was sweatting the emissions test last year. Luckily, I passed with flying colors. Running a new engine now so hopefully, I'll be OK now.
what year truck an what motor
egr is exhaust gas recirculating
pvc is plastic pipe for doing pluming
pcv is positive crankcase ventilation
tac i'm not sure of
TAB - Thermactor Air Bypass solenoid valve (AM1)
TAD - Thermactor Air Diverter solenoid valve (AM2)
are you sure it's TAC and PVC ??
do the tune up yourself, new plugs,rotor/cap wires and adjust timing to 10*btdc. get the oil changed and make sure the motor is good an warm before you take it in. this should take care of you
Depends on the year of your rig and the motor you have. Also I think in Texas there is a cap to how much they can make you spend to fix your vehicle and they have to give you your sticker.
I myself I have an '86 which someone butchered and spend alot of weekends in the parts yards.
