Internet/Computer help

I just got a new Dell Desktop and I just ordered Yahoo DSL service. You know on the modem they give you there are different lights for each of the following:

1. power
2. ethernet
3. DSL
4. internet
5. activity

The thing is, the power and DSL light is always on. The ethernet light is on only if the computer is on.

But the internet light is tricky. Sometimes when the light is unlight, I cannot get online even if I try. But I thought internet is connected 24/7 so the light should be always on regardless if the computer is on or not?

I'm ****ed there are times I try to go online and there is no internet service. But then other times there are. Is this normal? or unacceptable?

Thanks

DSL, stands for digital subscriber line, and allows a subscriber to access the 'net 24/7. That doesn't mean you are connected 24/7, just that you can access it. When th 'net light is on you are connected. If you can't hook up when you want, call customer support for yahoo.

If you are using hibernation or sleep mode with your computer the network card can go to sleep and not wake up or it may be a "keep alive" setting in your dsl software.

What operating system are you using? The options are not the same in all versions of windows.

Make sure yahoo allows 'unlimited' connectivity. Because of low bandwidth in your area, they may limit the amount of time a customer can access the 'net. The activity light should only be on when you download/upload data.

you said you just ordered it, did they give you an install date? just because you have the modem(recieved in mail?) does not mean you are hooked up, wait untill your install date(or day after).

also SBC just launched new software for their DSL, if you picked yours up at a store you may still have the old disk. they can send you a new disk or cut and paste this in you address bar support.sbcglobal.net then locate "self help tool" and download and install.
