We have cable and the highest speed service Charter offers. We have had it for a while and have been very satisfied with it. When we went from the lower of the 3 cable speeds they offer to the highest, we thought we should have noticed more increase, but did not know for sure.
Yesterday while a cable guy was here doing some work on some TV connections, he noticed the line to our computer and said we should replace it. It was approx 3 or 4 years old and was installed with the first cable modem, which was analog. He said that if you don't have the latest cable, esp. on a long run like ours, you won't get the full speed. So... he changed the cable free of charge and the difference is amazing. Google searches are now so fast at first I could not believe the search was even being performed!
So those of you with high speed cable internet and cables over a few years old, check it out. You may be able to increase your speeds noticeably just by upgrading the cable.
Heres one of the many places where you can test your connection speed http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=97
When I got my cable hooked up they replaced the entire line from the computer to the power pole because it was a few years old, heres a test I just took.
My cable guy was nice enough to directly connect my internet line to the big ugly cable box in my front yard (the one that feeds the neighborhood). He said I'll have the highest speeds on the block since I'm not going through any splitters and the cable line is literally 15' from my router. He even had to put a limiter of some sort cuz the signal was too good. Now that's what I'm talkin' about!
Alot of it has to do with computer potential too. You can have a fast connection but if your computer isn't up to par, you won't be able to reap the benefits of high speed. I tell you what, going wireless is the best thing ever. I can take my notebook out back and hang out in the hammock. Or when I'm working on my truck and need to reference something, I can get a signal out in the garage and most of the way down the driveway (only 25' long).
Anyways, I don't know how anyone can deal with dial up anymore (besides the cost aspect of course). It's like watching grass grow waiting for a page to load....
Yes, sometimes just changing the cable can mean a big speed jump because you do not lose packets so the router (csu/dsu etc.) will default to a higher speed. Some cables just tell the interface to go faster because it brings a line up or down. Same thing with a 10/100 LAN interface. It is nice you got a smart installer. I have gotten tech support people on the phone (bellsouth) to handle my problems that did not know what a static IP was.
