My buddy just bought a '99 SD Diesel and I have a '99 SD V10 - He was mentioning his tranny did not give him any engine braking downhill so suggested resetting the trans shift points - like I had seen in the manual. Problem is - I can find these instructions in my own manual anymore ! I remember reading that you could turn the key three times back and forth (without starting) and the tranny would clear the programmed shift points and assume the next drive style as your pattern. Where did I find this info? Also, he is convinced that his tranny needs a rebuild 90k miles - any suggestuions.
Well if you want to re-set the computer you can just disconnect the negative battery cable for a good hour, when you hook it back up the computer will be reset, as far as engine braking you can wire up the torque converter so that it can be manual locked even when you are not touching the throttle, gives you the same engine braking as a manual. Is his tranny slipping or why does he think it needs rebuilt?

due to the nature of a diesel (lack of butterfly valves in the intake), there is very little engine braking compared to a gasser.
you might want to suggest an exhaust brake setup.
there are several on the market.

There is no Ford that will do that. I haven't a clue where you got the info, but it certainly isn't true.
Also, the '99 diesel does not change or learn anything. Disconnecting the battery will only clear your stored radio stations. Shift points are hard programmed and do not change.
If he turns off the overdrive or moves the shifter to 2 or 1 does it get engine braking? If not, there is a problem with the coast clutch. Either a bad solenoid, bad wiring, or the clutch itself has come apart.
I drove with my buddy the other day in the truck, when he drives downhill the transmission doesnt give any resistance - with the overdrive off, the truck in D or in 2 it just freewheels down the hill. He punched it to kick the tranny down, but it wouldnt kick down. Then when he sped up going downhill - only the rpms went up - no speed increase. He is a welder and drives 450s and 550s - so he is used to diesels - I only know what my V10 would do in this situation. We stopped by the transmission shop and he knows/ trusts the mechanic - the mechanic said that a hold back or something was shot but would have to tear it down.
Aside from that, as we drove I kept hearing a clunk when he started or went into a turn. We got under the truck and the stabilizer mounts behind the front axle were loose. The mount on the left was split along the bolt line and the t weld was broken. I imagine the torque must loosen the bolts and finally the mount failed. I need to look at mine !
