Control-Trac 4X4 Question

what does the set-up on the Control-Trac system look like in an Explorer? I know that normal in about 70%rear, 30%front but does the system have open differentials or does it have some kind of slip-limiting device? Either a LS diferential or a locking diff, or can the system control each wheel? just wondering, because I just got back from a trip with my 2003 Explorer and it seemed to struggle going up the hills- dirt road covered in a little snow- I almost got stuck! I know my 1997 Explorer got up the same hill with over 6 inches of snow on it no problem, so I wondered now what the difference is, other than tires (although the Firestone Wildnerness HT's on the '97 seemed worse than the stock Michelin Cross-terrains on the '03 off road)
