Anybody ever put a 5.0 explorer transfer case behind their 4.0?
My 97 4.0 Explorer (Control-Trac) has the common t-case issue of grinding on engine braking and the 4hi just groans and doesn't move forward or back at all, and strangely enough 4lo works perfectly, engine braking, accel, decel, all perfect. So scouring my local craigslist I grabbed up a 4404-05 t-case from a 97 v8 5.0 control-trac Explorer for the price of scrap metal I could recycle it as (figured it was worth the gamble as I could scrap it for what I paid if it wouldn't work with any amount of part mix-n-match Frankenstein swapping) but before I jacked up the rig I figured I'd see if anybody else has ventured down this path ahead of me.
I thought about this, but it seemed to me like there were too many details to work out: driveshaft lengths, transfer case bolt patterns, mounts, what to do to suppress any codes that get set by missing or different sensors, coils, TC motor position feedback, etc. There's a lot to consider.
If you figure it out, post back with your findings.
