hey guys. I am getting into the hauling/ car transport business, and regularly will be pulling 18,000 pounds I was just wondering what do you guys think.
the SD has the capability to do a lot of things...if you dont mind shifting gears then get the 6 speed...the Torqshift is great but it might be a little less stress on the engine if you can get the weight moving a little before laying the hammer to it...just my $.02
I picked up my new one yesterday......it finally came in.
White big and new.
Allll right!!!! Hope you are having fun Tim Hey, is there a specific reason you did not get another ex this time? Just wondering, the wife is starting to bug me to take a good look at them instead of another CCab. She saw a loaded '05 and drooled......
I loved the X but for my trailer (see gallery) I needed a DRW.....when I get rid of the trailer..I will sell the truck and go find an X.
The X is still the best road/travel car I have ever driven…..hands down, and I have drive a bunch.
Man, that's a pretty good size trailer!! It sure would fit several hot air balloons and then some... We are looking at pulling a 25 ft or so camp trailer and maybe some quads so I think we are stuck with a truck since I really don't want to pull doubles.
looking into getting a 05 f-350 superduty with tow boss and psd. Just wondering if that sutup is up to the task of diong a job lke this.
I have a '05 F350 CC PSD Auto 3.73 2WD DRW LWB and pull a 50' 3 car trailer. It's pretty much the same as you are looking at, but the TowBoss was not available when I got mine.
For me, it works just fine - I pickup & deliver in a 250 mile radius of Chicago - pretty flat. If I was going farther where there are hills, I would have considered a different gear.
I will suggest a 5th wheel trailer with 2 dual axles (8 tires). I have a Kaufman but should have gotten a Take 3. Kaufman's 6 ft loading ramps were impossible to load a car - something like a 20 degree approach angle. I had to purchase some 14 ft aluminum ramps. Also, their tie down system left a lot to be desired. The Take 3 (any newer than 2000) has a great strap system.
Hope this helps...
Jim

an 18K load? or 18K gross? or 18K loaded trailer plus the truck????
with a GCWR of 26,000 u will be lucky to squeeze 12,000 on the trailer.
if u would like my suggestion, dont waste ur time and money getting into the transport industry. buuuuttt, if you are deadset on trying ur hand (ur paperwork hand, that is) go with a 450 or 550 cab n chassis and put a fifth wheel(like on a semi) on it and find urself a 48-53' lowboy with hydralic brakes.
thanks big hoss. tell me wich engine you have, and how well do you like it.
the 'lil 6oh i like it alot, but its no N14...... the quadzilla helps and the water does alot, but i really really wish i had gotton the 6spd.
the tow haul has no clue what its doing let alone what i want it to do. with the 4.88 gears, the ZF would be really nice, but if ur even thinkin bout a little 1 ton with those speed gears, get the TQSFT.
what u plan on haulin?? and where? and for who?? im glad to help.....;ive been in this mess for a while
Hi Machanic ...
I am in the transport business , hauling camper trailers/horse trailers etc ...
I have an 04 F350 crew duallie 6.0 3.73 rear gears ....
steeper gears might be ok , but I really like my 3.73 for cross country cruising ...she slips into overdrive at 70 mph and runs great .... The TorqueShift works great on the 6% drades in N. Idaho .... beautiful ...
My girl just recently took a heavy 3 axle camper to Salt Lake City and handled it
great .... I'm not sure I'd like the 4.30 gears of the tow boss package when dead-heading ( my 66 F250 has 4.56 gears and they are a bit steep ..).
