with 4.88 gears, 70 mph is 2600rpm. not high. and it stays locked in top gear on any and all hills. and i get the same fuel mileage as the 250's and 350's with the lower(numerical) gears.
and deadhead mileage really shouldnt be a part of ur decision. if u have a trailer u technically wont ever be "deadheading", because u will always be towing at least 6500lbs.
a guy at dean aproached me about hauling. we were talking about delivering new machines to companies and individules. shipping machines and materials to farmers, shipping steals and metals. i am thinking about what you said, I would like to get a 450/550 but this truck would also be my daily driver.

my 550 is my daily driver. and its the best truck money can buy in my opinion. it will never break. everything is made the way a truck should be made. huge axles, 19.5 wheels, no cushy grocery getter stuff.
100,000mi on a set of tires is pretty sweet and then u can regroove em for more miles! with my 53' flat, i weigh in empty at 15,840. my GCW is 37,500. i can put 21,000+ lbs of whatever on my trailer and go. when u are lookin for backhauls, that 1 ton's 11,000lb carrying capacity will really hurt you, because everyone else has a 1 ton. and LTL's and "hot-shot" loads dont pay squat because theres sooooo many guys out there tryin to pay for their truck and willing to run the wheels off for pennies.
with my 550, i can put 3, 4, 5, or more small LTL's on the deck at .75/mi a piece, or a "full load" of pipe or other lighter load that is waaaaay to much for the 1 ton jockeys. even if the load is light enuf for the 1 tons, sometimes the wind resistanse on a load of dumpsters or campers is enuf to fry the rear-end or tranny because of the poor gearing.

check out my gallery for pics of my truck.....(before i took the bed off to facilitate the 53' trailer)
man thats nice, i am new at this hauling thing. I think i will look at those 450/550 a little closer. I am glad i put ths question out there. i would have ben upset to get this truck and find out i cant pull anything. thanx for the info

now, the 1 ton is a fine truck, dont get me wrong.......... it will pull very well, its just not built specifically for it as the 550 is....... it is a bit cushy
big hoss you need to get some pics of your 550 with the new bed and 53' trailer.
If you did get a 350 you would end up wanting a 550 to handle the weight better. You will also be legal weight wise instead of being way over, even though the truck can handle it the DOT doesnt care.
I big Hoss ....I am still thinking ahead for my second vehicle in the towing ....
I am looking at the 550 as my next truck , even though the 350 is a greater truck , a lil more would be nice ... and if I spend the money to stretch and add a sleeper , I want to make sure I am happy with the platform ...
if u like the 350, ull love the 550 and i swear ull never go back!!!
its just like the rest of the trucks from the drivers seat, but when u crawl underneath, ull see the difference straight frames and monstrous axles huge leaf spring packs.
only problem is the new ones have those weenie coil spring things in the front and with their new axle for the 450/550, those fender flares look horrible.
did you get your truck new or used. I may have to look around to see if i can find me one used with low miles under warenty. at this piont i dont see any reason to get a 350 if i plan on realy hauling anything.

i got mine new. the 350 i was lookin at when i was workin at the ford dealership, thinkin of gettin into this mess, was gonna run me about 45K, a 450 that i found would've been about 48K, and i got my 550 priced real well at 50.
i know that sounds like a lot, but how much is a peterbilt 379 these days???? ouch!

well thats not really alot if you figure a f-350 king ranch is that exspensive and you are getting 1/3 the truck.
