I purchased my 05 Screw Lariat 5.4 about a month ago. I just turned 1000 miles. The problem I am having is starting the truck. At times it fires right off. Other times you have to crank it 5-7 seconds before it fires and at times have to turn the key off and try it again. It always fires right up the first thing in the morning with no problems. Since it doesn't do it all the time I'm having a hard time seeing any kind of pattern. It seems to be the worst after it sits for an hour or longer. When I am having problems starting, when it does start, it idles low (an at times clatters for a second) before it idles as it should. Once running it runs great with no problems. I've had it back to my dealer twice for this. The first time they couldn't duplicate the problem. The second time they tested the fuel system (pump and injection system they say) and didn't find any problems. I am going to take it back today and let them keep it til they find the problem. It's aggrevating and embarrassing as well with the looks I get with a new truck. My dealer has been great so far though. Has anyone experienced a problem similar or may know something I can relay to my dealer?

I have an 04 Lariat 4x4 with 6500 miles that I bought in August '04. Several times I have had to try twice to start it. I haven't been trying to discover a pattern because it does it so seldom. But you are right, it always starts 1st thing in the morning. Mine seems to do it while the engine is still hot - for example, when I go into and out of a convenience store. The reason I say this is because it is kind of embarrassing to have to crank a $38,000 truck over two separate times in front of people. I've got a small notepad in the glove box and will keep good notes on when it does it. Keep me posted on what you find. I think this one will be a tough one to chase down.
It's taken 4 trips to the dealer for my starting problem. I can't give enough credit to the service department for all their efforts in trying to locate my problem. I certainly understand how tough it is since the truck has no particular pattern when it acts up. The last visit, it took them all day of starting and driving off and on to find the problem. It turned out to be a problem with 2 injectors on the drivers side. They replaced all the injectors to be on the safe side. It's been 2 weeks now and I have never had a starting problem since. The service manager told me that is the first time they have ever experienced this type of problem in a new gasoline.
This may or may not be a similar problem with your truck, but it would be worth it to mention my problem. Let me know how things turn out.
Today I duplicated it. I took my son to school and came home. (8 miles round trip) Turned the truck off and just for grins, turned the starter over like I would normally to start it. It didn't start. I tried again - no joy. Took me 5 times of turning the key off and then turning it over again to get it started. It was 42 degrees outside and I have 3/4 of a tank of gas.
I have had my 05 screw fx for 2 weeks now. Have noticed 2 or 3 times when starting the truck that it doesn't start on first try. Always starts on the second never anymore like you guys described. Not sure if the couple times it was me not holding the key long enough or what but if it keeps doing it I will bring it in and tell them what the fix is. Does it take long to change the injectors? Is it a problem that will only get worse as time goes on?
My 04 FX4 did that a few times the first month or so I had it.It is embaressing in front of people.I took it in for service and told the tech what it was doing. He reflashed the computer**it was gone.Hasn`t done it in the last 12,000 miles.
I have a super crew 03 , and it only starts when it wants to. Some days I go out to the truck it starts right up. Some days it wont. I had my buddy put an automatic starter in. So the dealer blames it on that. Although I had the problem way before. Does any one else find that the Anti theft light is going off when their truck wont start ? has any one found the problem?

I had a starting problem also. I would not consider mine as extreme as some in this thread. Mine would occasionally take two or three tries to start. Very intermittent. A reflash seems to have cured my problem (been 9kmiles). An injector leakdown test was also done. It sounds like most of you should ask your dealerships about the leakdown test.
I've noticed the same thing with my 05 with 9300 miles whenever it sits for an hour or less and the engine is warm. Its done it to me a few times. It seems to act like its flooded or something I let it sit for a minute then try it again then fire it it no problems. One other thing I noticed whenever it does this is that I pretty much just bumped the ignition I didnt hold it long at all. So I figured it was just me, but now maybe not. Now Im gonna keep track of this in mine.
mine has the same problem. usually happens when it's warm out.
It's really annoying. I haven't taken it to the dealer b/c I work with my truck so much. I know if I take it, they won't be able to reproduce it and they'll give it back to me without any solution.
Same problem here also, happened twice this weekend. Seems to happen after I drive for a while then get in to start up (engine warm). When this happens it stutters, misses and then stalls. When I tried to restart it cranks for much longer than usual and then starts up and runs fine. On the second occurence I turned the key all the way to off and it started right up. I'm wondering if there was DTC code stored. I'll have it checked on my next service and post if any new info.
I get it too. Hasn't been too troublesome up until recently, but it does seem to be happening more often lately. And it is after the truck is off for brief periods of time, not after sitting for a while. I'm wondering if it's an injector problem, as it seems to be fuel related. There is spark, but it won't ignite fully. Once it starts, it idles high for a few seconds, most likely burning off excess fuel. It's more annoying than anything else.
I think my friend found out our problem. Before you start your truck , make sure your chime isn't ringing even though there is no key in the ignition or your lights are on... mine was loose .. and he taped it up and now im going to see if this helps ... I have a feeling it will...
