Help! Truck Misses

Hi, I own a 1984 Ford F150 4x4 300 inline six 4 speed. A couple of days ago i went to pick up a snowmobile, and my truck had no power. I can not get pass 45mph. When the truck is idiling and a step on the gas it just starts cutting out. When i am going down the rode the truck also misses real bad. When i shift to 4th gear and try to accelerate passed 45mph the truck won't go and just stubles. It has stalled on me a few times at stop signs. Tharb idle speed is set at 900 to 1000 rpms. I have replaced the fuel pump, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and the rotor.

Thanks for your help,

Ryan

Could be a number of things really, but I would take a guess at it being ignition-related. Several items to check for starters would be the ignition coil, the stator and pickup coil assembly (under the distributor rotor), and the ignition control module. (I'm assuming that the cap, rotor, and wires are all good...... my apologies if you've already stated that you've changed one or all of these, I couldn't remember anything but the plugs in your post.) If none of the above are the culprit, you may also check your vacuum advance on the distributor. If this is not it, you may consider a carb rebuild. I would suspect a vacuum leak, like one where the manifold bolts up to the head, but it seems that your truck is idling fine and is only acting up under load, which wouldn't be the case if the engine was leaking vacuum.

sounds to me like your fuel bowl aint being kept full of gas. I'd check the fuel filter or for a bent fuel line somewhere. I had the same thing happen to me. It would start fine after sitting at a redlight for a while then when i'd get going after boug 45 seconds it would cut out and stall. I checked the fuel filter and pump and it was a kinked fuel line. Also, the float mighta got a hole in it and that would cause it to fill up with gas and keep the needle valve closed. Just my 2 cents. haha

Help! Truck Misses

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Jan-02 AT 02:02 AM (EST)]Wait. you said it cuts out when you push on the gas? now it sounds like its floodin out. Either way, check carb and fuel system. Could be a blown out power valve causin it to flood out. Carb rebuild time. 1 barrels are a snap to do. It took me bout 3 hours to rebuild my motorcraft 2150 2 barrel (not countin cleaner soaking time)

I had a similiar problem with my 86. I could get up to around 40 mph very slowly but when I tried to accelerate heavily the truck stalled terribly. We searched for over 2 weeks to find the problem and it turns out it was a clogged fuel filter. If you havent already, try replacing it.

If all else fails, you also might want to check your voltage regulator and harness...

I had an 84 ford van that did the same thing to me. It turned out it was the fuel pump.

Help! Truck Misses

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Jan-02 AT 03:14 PM (EST)]You know the saying about everybody and their opinion... For what its worth, I had same symptoms in my '84 F150 300I6. Got lucky - the cheap fix involved only re-tightening the carb mounting bolts, which periodically work loose on those engines - but I spent HOURS trying to find the problem. Good luck on finding the cheap fix!!

The fastest way to find a vaccuum leak, is to spray a bit of starting fluid near places that might be the source. If there's a leak, the engine runs noticeably different for a second. If you have power brakes, don't overlook the brake booster either!

It also sounds like a timing check is in order. That would be a quicky, it should only take a minute or two to see if your marks are lined up right, and if the advance is doing it's job.

About the advance unit - certain years and models have a vacuum control that won't allow the vaccuum advance to operate until the engine warms up, so make sure it's already warm when you check it.

All of the other ideas I've seen here sound like good ones. I would shoot for the quick checks first though.

try checking the choke to make sure it isn't stuck cause my truck had that same problem before and it took me quite a while to figure it out.

I have the same carb! Horrible performance, I hope you have some pointers on rebuilding it. Because I need 'em! I even have all the factory manuals!! 25 bucks at swap meet(SCORE!) I went to ebay and purchased a strange carb rebuilding book- itseems to be from factory training classes. Very cool! Ok here be the prob, I think the throttle plates are binding, does that sound right? ANd I am pissed they would think plastic can pass for carb spacer and last!yeah right!! Well my carb is definitely on the way out and would like some advice I dont have $$ butwantto upgrade w/out changing intake or is that feasible? Blabla Im long winded eh? Thanks for your time! You can talk to these people about an upgrade (www.cliffordperformance.com) but I don't think you can do much if you keep the stock intake.

If your gasket is going bad underneath the carb, this could cause your throttle to be sticking. If the spacer/gasket doesn't support the carb base evenly, the bottom of the carb can warp causing the throttle shaft to bind. They sometimes use a composite type thick gasket to insulate the carb from engine heat, so I would buy another one just like it.
