I was lookin to put an AOD in my '80 F150. It has a mildly built 302, C4, and a 2.73 rear gear in the 9inch. I had a 3.55 rear gear and loved it but I would like to go lower. I'm considering putting an AOD (there are a pair of them in the paper for 120, they both work) in and finishing it off with a 4.56 in the rear. I think it would scoot nicely with that. Let me know what you think. I'm tryin to do this on a limited budget ( 500-700 bucks.) Thanks.
AOD's have a bad reputation, but mostly undeserved. You can make one REALLY tough if money isn't a problem, but according to Baumann Engineering, a good quality shift kit will solve a lot of durability problems, and definitely won't break the bank. I'm planning on an AOD for my '86 soon, so I've been researching it a bit. Thinking seriously about rebuilding one myself. I've only built one auto tranny, a GM TH350, and it's not as big of a deal as you might think. (I had a professional tranny builder watching over my shoulder then though). Still, a good book should make it do-able. I'd go for one of those in the paper if I were you, toss in a good shift kit and run it. Just be very careful to get the TV cable adjusted properly or you can smoke the whole tranny quickly.
Could someone walk me through a TV cable set up with a four barrel Holley 600cfm carburator. I don't have anything to do it, I don't even have the cable. Can I buy a set up from some aftermarket company?
