Hi All,
I'm putting together a plan to do a C6 to AOD conversion on my 87 F150 4x4 w/302. Been doing some research, here's what I've come up with so far.
AOD to engine block bolt pattern, not a problem.
Flexplate and torque converter, no problem.
Mounting to crossmember, not a problem.
TV cable, dipstick, shift linkage, safety switch, cooling lines - minor modifications and fabrication, not a big deal.
Here's where the problems come in.
Can I use any AOD? I found a tech article that said there was only one model of AOD that is for 4wd. Other than the output shaft length and extension housing, I don't know what other differences there would be. I found somewhere that the Mustang AOD's have a shorter output shaft than the Lincoln and F150 AOD's. Can I use one out of a lincoln?
Transfer case - I currently have the BW 1356 manual shift with slip type output. Is there an extension housing that will fit the AOD to this transfer case? Since the AOD is only 1/2" longer than the C6, if I can get the right ext housing/shaft length combo, I would assume I can use my existing driveshaft.
Can anyone point me to the info or volunteer their expertise.
only the one for the 4x4 will work, the x-case will bolt up,re-use the adapter from the c6 your slip will make up the 1/2"
so really the only thing you need to swap will be the tranny itself and i think the return fluid line(I know one works and one need to be rerouted)
this is a straight bolt in as long as you use a 4X4 output shaft on the tranny any aod will fit . I used a car tranny and changed the output shaft to one from a 4X4 trans that had crapped out. Make sure you get the tv cable set right - in other words little or no slack.
may be some confusion here. the output shaft and tailshaft are one and the same. the 4X4 trans uses a shorter one than the 2wd trans. tailshaft housing goes in the garbage and transfer case bolts to the tranny without the tailshaft housing used on 2wd tranny. your govenor and park setup goes into the adapter which joins the tranny to the transfer case, about 6in. long with rear tranny mount pad and threaded holes for the shift linkage. If you've never changed the shafts before you need to take the valve body off and take the accumulator pistons out so that you can remove the bands(2) and then just pull the tranny apart from the front and keep it in orderand put it back together reverse order , the output shaft comes out the front of the trans.
Hmmm...lots of info, thanks. I'm planning to get the tranny from a rebuilder in IL, and I can order the 4WD version. I'm not planning on taking the output shaft out or dissasembling the tranny so I would like to get the proper setup from the rebuilder.
I do know I will be using the ext housing from the C6 setup to attach transfer case to the AOD. Do I still need to transfer the governor and parking setup from my current transmission? Are there any gaskets that go between the tranny/ext housing or transfer case/ext housing.
When I get home I'll check my books and see what doesn't make sense.
no- in a word the AOD that you get will have it's own govenor and park setup and you will only need 2 gaskets or if you leave the adapter on the transfer case one- but it's easier if you remove the adapter from the transfer case 6 bolts and attach it to the trans and then put it in-cleaner too (less chance of crud getting on the govenor) obviously you will need to take off the shift linkage for the transfer case.
yeah, I figured pulling the transfer case and ext housing would mean disconnecting linkage. So far the fitment issues have been the easy part. Ford no longer has the linkage/TV cable bracket, which is different than the C6, or the TV cable or the gaskets. So I'll need a day of calling salvage yards for bracket and cable and tranny shop for gaskets.
I had looked at the Lokar kit before, but hesitated because it didn't look anything like the OE shown in the manuals I have. It actually looks similar to the kickdown cable on the C6. But since I don't have much choice I'll give it a shot. Looks like I will end up making the shift linkage bracket, not a big deal though.
I know this is an old thread, but i did this swap not too long ago and i can't figure out how to make my original T-case linkage work. It doesn't line up with the hole in the floor anymore. It's an 82 Bronco with a 351W, NP208, and now an AOD from an 87 F150. The AOD transmission is only 3/8" longer than the C6 and i reused the C6 tail shaft housing since the aod one doesn't have the shifter pivot hole. but somehow it's set the ****er's pivot too far to the rear.
Don't know if it matters but I've got the tall shifter that sets the ball about level with the HVAC controls. Do i need to make a Z bend in the shifter to offset it or do i need a longer piece of flat stock to go between the shifter and the T case and a re-location bracket for the shifter pivot? Is there an adapter kit somewhere? Should i have grabbed a floor shifter with the cable and? Please help
