About 9.5 to 10 here in Atlanta - I have to drive like there is an egg under the gas pedal to get that. I think I'll start turning the engine off at red lights if gas prices rise...
I got a 79 with a 460 and it gets 12 most of the time , i haul a 30 foot toy box and roll in at the scales at 14000lbs ( wife packs everything including the kitchen sink) and i get around 10 mpg BUT...... that dependes on how far you push the pedal down .
on what most of you guys are saving on new truck payments you should be smiling when you go to the gas pumps , just think you could have a 600. a month payment and still have to buy fuel , and by the way diesel here is .55 more a gallon than gas .
My 1984 F250 Supercab, Superduty with 460, C-6 and 4.10 rearend, 3" exhaust and a 600 CFM Holley with vacuum secondaries and a recurved dist; I get 11 mpg with a bare truck and 9 mpg with the camper on board if I keep it 55 mph and under (the boat and ATV trailers make no difference). 60 mph drops it to about 8 mpg. Being retired I'm not in any hurry so it doesn't matter to me.
You have to remember, until '92 or '93, f350 460s didn't have the overdrive- that makes a big difference, i test drove both and that influenced my purchase quite a bit.
Ive got an 89 37 Ft. Motorhome with an 88 460. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 16,000 Lbs. I get 7 mpg in the flat areas. Does pretty well on the hills. Looking for improvement in the mileage dept.
1984, F250 SuperDuty, SuperCab, 460-Stock 4 barrel Holley, 3" exhaust, C-6 and 4:10 rearend. Got 7 to 9mpg after the exhuast was added. Recurved dist last month and throttle response improved immensely and mileage climbed up to 8 to 10mpg even with the boat(18 feet) or 4 quad trailer in tow. Plan on upgrading stock Holley to a home massaged 600CFM vacuum secondary Holley (List 1850) with stiffer seconadary spring in it and 2 stage power valve. Should be good for at least 2 mpg more, any way was when I did it to my 1968 F250 with a 390. I also don't drive this set up over 60mph as the secondaries tip in and you can see the gas gauge falling.
Hey Bear 45/70 where didya find the recurve items. I looked both Jegs and Summit and didn't see any listings. My rig has headers 2.5s into a 2 in 1 out 3" muffler. Im planning on upgrading the ignition system to 8mm wires and the 45,000 volt Super coil. Has anybody heard of problems with that set up? Any ideas on detonation problems, burnt pistons, valves etc. I bought this bohemoth used and dont know the particulars on the headers. They are the Tri Y type and are coated.
my 84 F250hd 4x4 ext cab with granny 4sp will get no better than 8 mpg, most of the time 6 mpg and under [ heavy foot ]. its got a holley 750 eldelbrock street master intake and 3" true dual exhaust run outside the frame rails only drive it in the snow or when I go fishing. Its also got 33x12.5x16.5 tires on it.I drive my 86 F150 302 efi aod it gets any where from 18 to 20 mpg most of the time even with a heavy right foot
What does recurved the distributer do for you? re-curved in what way?
Also is that 3" exhaust hooked up to headers or manifolds?
First off the stock manifolds with 2 1/2" head pipes into a single 3" exhaust pipe and muffler and tail pipe. When you recurve a dist you usually shorten the advance curve. Originally the dist had 18 degrees of mechanical advance in it. That's 36 degrees at the crank and the total came in after 4000 rpm. All I did was pull the cap, rotor, reluctor and base plate. Remove the retaining ring in the center of the dist shaft and lift the advance mechanisim an rotate it 180 degrees from the 18 degree curve to the 13 degree curve. Reinstall the parts in reverse order. You then need to move the plug wires 180 degrees or the engine won't run as the rotor is 180 degrees out. Start engine and set initial timing up 10 degrees. I want the timing in fast so I bent the heavy spring tang in so there is no advance there and the adjusted the tang on the light spring until I had full advance at 3200 rpm(not counting vacuum). The engine is much more responsive due to the extra degrees of initial timing and the quick advance curve helps too. The last tank of gas got me just over 9 mpg. Worth the effort. Look here for advance kits;
I have an 86 F250 4x4, 460 CI, C-6, 3:55s. I have dual 2.5 exhaust, Edebrock Performer intake with a Holley 600 CFM. Desmoged. I get 6-11 MPG, 6-7 MPG towing our 5500# Travel trailer.
460-C6, Engine and tranny rebuilt 15,000 miles ago, Motorcraft carb.250mile trip mostly highway using cruise and air conditioning,empty,no tailgate,55MPH-12.3 .250 miles with 8 1/2 ft. cabover camper on same driving[on return trip] characteristics-9.3 MPG
