i know this is a common problem with early model dual tank trucks. The search function doesn't seem to be working for me, so if someone could point me towards a thread or just answer this question that would be great. I got a 1989 f150 with dual tanks. the front tank reads fine but when i use the switch on the dask it reads the rear tank as bone dry. i know there IS fuel in the rear tank. What's my solution here?
I have a similar problem. My rear works but my front doesn't. It won't switch. I changed the under dash switch and the valve/solenoid under the truck between the tanks. It still won't switch the tank or read the other gauge. I am going to get into it again today and see what I can find. I will get back to you if I find the problem.
You might have a sending unit problem. Does yours run on the rear tank and not read it, or is the problem like mine?
mine runs on BOTH tanks, however, when i switch the dash tank to the rear tank, the gauge pegs to zero. It still runs, i'm just unsure of the amound of gas i have left in the rear tank. My front tank reads fine.
Mine turned out to be electrical. Fixed now. You might have a bad sending unit or maybe a bad ground. Dealer only maybe. Try the search again. Good luck with it.
There are two fuel relays on the driver side fender area, these go bad often. What a lot of people do is just run ignition hot power DIRECTLY to the pumps, this is BAD. Both tanks should NOT run at the same time, it will eventually burn out the pump that is in what ever tank goes empty first. This may also be why your sending unit is not reading on the rear tank, it could be electrically disconnected.
When you fill the rear tank does it read full? Just wondering if the fuel from the rear tank is being pumped to the front tank, mine took about an hour to pump all the fuel from the rear to the front. This is a common problem for 87 to 89.
If not the problem then you may have to test the three wires that go to the sending unit plug, which is at the rear fuel tank. The sending unit is inside the tank. A lot of people put in a new fuel pump sending unit and it still doesn't fix the problem. Fuel gages are a common problems with most ford trucks. If it were me I would just live with it. Good Luck
it does not pump to or from the front tank when i have the rear tank selected. When i select the rear tank it pumps from the rear tank only and the gauge reads nothing.
I know they changed the piping between 88 and 95 but the 95 manual says that Resistance should be 22 ohms at Empty and 145 ohms at Full; the rear tank electrical connector has a yellow/ light blue wire for sender measured to the black lead (ground); the front tank is Light blue /yellow lead to Black for sender. I dont think they changed wiring or resistance scheme but will verify in 88 book and post back if this is wrong. Good luck!!
My books don't have any numbers, but last time I changed mine I tested the ohms on the new unit and they were close to the numbers that 95X15 said, and mine is an 85.
seems like it is just a fuel sender problem, I hate to say it but the best thing to do is drop the tank and remove the seder. more than likely it might just be that the float rotted and is full of water. If you find that is not the case then while you have the sender out put a multi meter on the electrical connectors and check the resistance while you move the float rod to see if it is not working or if there is a dead spot on it. But I think it is prob the float. I've been selling Ford parts for 7 years and they do tend to rot out. cheap fix, but time consuming.
