The bottom 4 to 6 inches of my '88 Ranger standard cab doors are rusted and basically flaking away. Is there any kind of slip over cover or suggestions anyone can give me for fixing these? I'm guessing I'm going to have to try do a couple bends in a piece of sheet metal so it goes up inside the cab and is riveted into the solid metal along the inside door panel somewhere. Also, can anyone recommend any low profile rivet sources for attatching some patch panels? I'm not equipped to weld as I'm working on the truck with hand tools and cordless drill/impact driver in a field right now, I know it won't be perfect but I'm not going for a show quality finish.
What you may want to do is go to Autozone or some place similar and buy a door bottom and rivet it to the existing door. Anytime I have had an older vehicle with crumbly doors I cruised through the junkyards for same makes/models with good doors. Even ones with some surface rust was acceptable, cause that could be sanded off then cheaply painted to match.
Would it be worth it to get another door? Depends on the deal you get. You might get something for about the same or a little more than what you would be paying in materiels etc... for doing it yourself. It safes a bunch of time as well. Take a walk through a junkyard and ask about some prices.
Just a quick look at jcwhitney shows a new door for an '88 ranger @ $189 each. Of course they would still need paint.
