I have never heard of an EGR setting off the Engine Light. Mine had 4 egr codes in it when I checked it due to the egr valve being unplugged, however it did not show a check engine light. Maybe you have another problem.

Just curious, why unplug the EGR? Does it affect performance?

I had the same problem when unplugging the EGR. It appears that Cali emissions trucks use a 5 wire harness instead of the standard 4 wire. The extra wire must set off some sort of sensor or something that turns on the check engine light?

captain diesel,
No, I hooked mine back up and removed battery cables to reset any codes and the light. I am hoping that someone around here with much more brain power and insight than I will figure out how to cure the check engine light when this is unplugged. Good luck.

All of them are 5 wire (despite what my instructions read in the EGR thread) but the Cali trucks will pull the MIL if disconnected.

It won't hurt to leave it unhooked but that light will get annoying. I just pulled mine and went for a drive to see if my light would come on. My light didn't come on and it runs fine. Maybe even a little more responsive. Mine was bought in Idaho and is from Canada though.

I pulled the EGR plug on my 2005 Excursion that has a 2004 engine, and the light came on. My Ex is an Ohio truck too.

I sure hope someone figure out how to kill that light.
