you and me both buddie!
i have found that quicktime bellhousings just came out with one to adapt to an AOD, not sure which boltpattern( id assume smallblock) if a guy could use this adapter to use a standard trans from the same boltpattern?
I think the only way to do it is to make/use a bellhousing adapter, or what i have been trying to find is a t5 or t6 or any trans that has a seperable gearbox/bellhousing, and adapt(if necessary) to my 360 bellhousing (i have a t18)
so at that note you could find a bell off a 360/390 with a 4spd std trans and adapt from there

You are gonna want the ZF-5 for your truck. You have to make an adapter plate to mount it on there. If you have a machine shop available they can make it for you. I'm in the process of getting all the hole locations for my truck so I can mount a 460 based ZF in my truck. I just haven't found the time to put the M-block bell housing up on the mill yet. Mine will be made from scratch and won't happen super fast since I can only get it up on the mill on my day off which I still have yet to see one of thoes. Ford made a ZF for the Windsor blocks and the AOD was a Winsor block trans so that should work for a faster solution. If I have confused you let me know. I apologize if I have.

The way I see it, you have 2 options.
1.) use a nearly $1000 adapter to mate a windsor or 460 bellhousing ZF transmission. There are a few companies out there that carry this adaptor. It is a plate that bolts to the block + a flywheel adapter/spacer.
2.) I believe advanced adaptors sells a simpler adapter for to use a dodge NV4500. The NV4500 does not have an integral bellhousing, and you would use your stock FE bell.
Good luck! If you do it, it would be a sweet powertrain!!

The NV4500 is a 5 speed and a stout tranny at that. There are heavily modified 12V Cummins that are having a hard time breaking one, Chevy also used the NV4500. If you can find one you could also use a NV5600 and have a 6 speed with od. And as bigperm2 stated you can use your FE bell and buy a much cheaper adapter to use these trannys.

The Bronco Graveyard's got your back... NV4500
NV4500 Trans Kit (does not include transmission)
Here is a write-up on a similar swap I found on this site...
Installing the NV4500 Overdrive Transmission .: Articles
I read elsewhere that the FE engine acts a little quirky when you bolt an overdrive to it while being perfectly content with spinning at 3000 rpms all day. You can find more info if you do a general internet search for '390 NV4500' or something to that extent.
If its mileage your looking for you might get more bang for the buck with other mods such as intake, exhaust, fan, ignition, weight, gearing, etc... A combination of a few of these might get you a few extra miles with other performance perks a tranny swap may not offer. If engine wear is the concern I believe it was built for this and has lasted 40 years doing so. She is a tough old girl.
I am not trying to talk you out of it; in fact I might look farther into it down the road but at this point she has got plenty of other things to keep me busy.
