Manual transmission identification

I just got an "82 250 with 300" 6 and granny 4-speed with a 4.10 rear end. I want to put in an overdrive transmission. Which would be the best choice? I carry heavy loads ocasionally but I am not hard on my trucks-if anything I baby them. From reading other posts, I am aware of 4-speeds with OD that most people say are junk, also two different 5-speeds with OD. If these transmissions are out of the truck, how do I identify each one? Has anyone made up a list of manual transmissions available and a way to identify them-also what years they were available? Will I need to change the bellhousing if I change to a different trans.? Do the newer 5-speeds have a hydraulic clutch and if so how hard is that to hook up? Thank you.
