Please help me identify my automatic transmission
I have examined my vehicle ID number and entered it on a Ford website, to no avail.
http://www.flmowner.com/servlet/Cont...hicleSpecsPage
I am of the opinion I have an "E40" transmission, but I don't know where I got that information. My service book says an "E40D" had no requirement for periodic fluid change-out.
What is the difference between "E40" and "E40D" I wonder?
I do know my transmission has 4 forward speeds. I have an 8-cyl 5.4L gasoline engine. The van was mfgd in Ohio, and first sold (to me) in California, where I still live.
Can you recommend a website where my vehicle ID number will reveal this information?
Can you tell me how to inspect the vehicle, or the transmission itself, to learn the model of the tranny?
Thanks.

I know it's not a diffinitive resource but wikipedia's ford transmission list doesn't show a E40 transmission. Based on the year of your van I think you most likely have a 4R70W. If you look inside the driver's door frame there should be a sticker with a bunch of codes for paint, axle trans, etc... Get the code for the trans off of there and you should be able tolook it up online.

Never heard of an "E40" tranny. Here's a lot of FORD tranny info that might help:

I was puzzled & getting a run around once trying to ID a tranny. Oddly enough the model was stamped in large letters right on the tranny's pan! I would expect any FORD dealer worth their salt should be able to ID it, same w/tranny shops.

There is no E40...

Circa 1998, the E4OD was revised and renamed the 4R100. This new nomenclature means 4 speed, Rear wheel drive, 1000 ft lbs of torque capacity (engine torque is multiplied by two via the torque converter).
The smaller engines use the 4R70W (700 ft lbs capacity, and the W is for Wide ratio gearing), revised to the 4R75W.
I am not sure if you have the 4R70 or E4OD/4R100; the 70 has 14 bolts on the pan; the E4OD/100 has 20 bolts. Looks like they used the E4OD thru 12/97 production and 4R100 starting 1/98, so if you have the bigger trans, you could have either one in a 1998 van. But if it's an E150, I'm guessing you may have the 4R70W.
There will be a transmission code on the VIN sticker on the driver's door jamb; I don't have the codes for reference, but you should be able to find them doing some google searches or something. This is the same sticker that lists axle code, etc.
Edit: if the trans code is U, its the 4R70W:

Looks like the big trans only went into 8000+ gvw vans...
Looking at the specs for 01-02 vans on this site, it looks like all E150's and even all E250's under 8000 lbs GVW got the 4R70W transmission, not the E4OD/4R100.
The "U" code on the door sticker should verify this for you, along with the 14 pan bolts.
Take care,
George
