2000 Expedition Console

Has anyone ever figure out what that protruding piece of plastic is on the back end of the console, just above the audio controls? It appears to be quite useless. Did Ford intend to do something with this and then at the last minute change their minds?

I think it was intended to be a hook for a set of headphones.
