I have a 1994 ford x-tended cab ranger that is 4x4 with 278,000 km/s on it and all works good except------when in any gear, 4x4 aswell (high and low), there is no engine holdback at all when going downhill. When I rev the engine up it does engange the gears positivley though. Is this a torque converter or does anyone know of another cause? I should mention that shifting and acceleration are always strong and good in any other circumstance........PLEASE HELP AS I AM FRUSTRATED!
No codes present, and as far as "sprag" that is not something I am familiar with, can someone explain what this is, and how to diagnose? I am seriously at my wits end with this problem. I have a fully ticketed mechanic--friend--that is also running out of ideas.
I noticed the same thing today in my '97 4x4 (65,000mi). I get some engine braking when I'm in 2nd, but there's none at all in 1st which is where I need it most. It doesn't matter whether I'm in 2WD or 4WD. Seems odd that there'd be no engine braking in 1st gear.
Anyone know what gives? Aren't all transmissions supposed to provide some braking when you manually downshift?
For archive's sake, the solution was TSB 03-22-10--replacing the valve body gasket. It was blown out in two places. After I installed the new gasket, I had engine braking in 1st and 2nd gears when manually selected.
