Distribution Valve

I just took my truck to a mechanic because the break was spongy. I told him to bleed the system and that was it. When I went to go pick up my truck he told me that he replaced the master cylendar and that it needed a new distribution valve, which was ordered. Since I'm a college student funds are limited so I told the mechanic that I wanted a second opinon so I paid for the work done and drove off. The stupid, stupid mechanic forget to screw of the lug nuts on my tire and by the time I realized it wasn't the brakes but instead the wheel was about to fall off. This would have destroyed my 1985 Bronco, which is perfect condition. My question to you guys is, what is the importance of a distribution valve? My truck has 60,000 original miles and works very well, when the wheels are screwed on tight. Does the distribution valve wear easily.

Thanks
BigRed

To tell you the truth I never heard of a Distribution Valve? I use to work for a break shop, not long, but still never heard of it. Looked it up on Google and google doesn't assosiate it with breakes. Good luck!

Proportioning valves don't really wear out. In fact the only time they ever malfunction is if the hydraulic system gets contaminated with crud (i.e. rust, water, air) on the inside. and if that happens you will have other problems before the Proportioning valve dies.

porportion valve

What are some indicators that this valve is not working accuratley. Is the only way to fix this problem is to replace it or can I just clean it out and if it needs to be replaced then how ergent is it. Thanks a lot for the imput I'm just not sure on what to do about this problem and I think this mechanic doesn't know what he is doing.

I am not the original owner but my father is a car sales man and he gets really good deals sometimes. I bought this 5.8 liter 1985, with 57000 original miles for $1900. I got really lucky.

The proportioning valve(s) control fluid flow to the wheel cylinders in the braking system. A malfunction will cause one wheel or the wheels on one axle to either grab harder or not grab hard enough during braking operations. Often this is also a symptom of air in the brake lines so a complete bleed of the system would be recommended PRIOR to replacing the valve(s). This will also clean out any comtaminants in the old fluid. These valves don't have many, if any, moving parts so failure is a rarety. However should it be necessary they are specific to the vehicle and they are not usually available aftermarket so Ford will be about your only option aside fro installing a used one.
