Does anyone know the Melling MTF2 specifications for a 351M/400? When my 400 was rebuilt, the machine shop installed this in the engine and I'd like to know the specs (for future upgrades...if necessary ). Thanks,
Thanks, I was hoping it had the same specs as the Edelbrock.
The cam is pretty nice, although I may upgrade since it doesn't have the performance/mileage ratio I was hoping for (I'll likely go with something like the comp xe262h). Before the rebuild, my truck had a cam that ran like a raped ape (and got better mileage). I may also replace the 1406 with a 1405.

going with the manual choke carb will further decrease your fuel milleage. if thats not an issue you can tune the 1406 to the 1405 specs by changing the jets, rods and springs. a whole lot cheaper route.
If the 1405 is calibrated/adjusted correctly, it can offer good mileage. I'm getting sick of adjusting the choke for cold/hot/cold/hot (or not running smoothly). I've kept a mileage/modification chart since i purchased the truck and there were times of 11+mpg.
also if your not experiencing any detonation your could bump your initial timing up. and check that your vacuum advance is working properly, that will effect gas mileage. 11-14mpg is about the norm for these engines.
The 1405 and 1406 are the same except for their calibration and the choke type. They can each be converted or calibrated to either type. The 1405 is calibrated for performance and the 1406 is calibrated for economy. For more information check with the carb forum.
Hi,
i'm currently installing this cam, and am doing this for the first time.
Now, i want to make surethat it's installed right.
My measurements are:
Intake:
Max. lift: .285
3 deg. open
210 deg. close
So, duration is 207 deg, wich is fine.
Exhaust:
Max. lift: .322
Open: 135 deg.
close: 352 deg.
Lobe centerline is average, so 217 deg, wich is also fine.
Cam's allright.
But... How do i tell if it's timed right?
Only thing that the box says about timing are:
BTC: -4
ABC 26
BBC 45
ATC -11
I can't make anything out of those values to be honest...
