Kwik's Odd Looking Air Filter

Well I finally tried the "Kwik Filter". '97 Super Cab 4x4, LB. Cost me about $43.00. My truck is (was) stock. Noticed a little better response in the get up and go. Happy with it. Never had a problem with the stock box dusting, I think that is an installation issue. I ended up using a 3", 45', pvc elbow to make the bend, and left the stock grill air scoop in place. Fits like a glove - kind of snapped in place (pvc) like it was made for it. Inside diameter of the pvc is 3.5 which is my only concern. Wondering if I should go with the 4" exhaust bend instead. Thanks Kwik, I like your idea.

If your truck is otherwise stock, and you never get up into the high rpm range, you probably won't notice a difference between 3.5" and 4". Your stock downpipe will only flow so much air, so having the extra 1/2" diameter in the intake pipe probably won't benefit you much.

Your welcome. I wish I could take the credit for the idea, but it's not mine. I read it in a post somewhere here or on the dieselstop. He just didn't take a picture and post it!

Correction - the smallest part of the pvc is 3" I/D. Duh, I don't know what I was thinking. Works well but might go with the 4" exhaust piece instead. Robbgt - what size tubing do you have on yours? I see in the picture it's white - pvc?

I have form the stock hose a 45* Sch 40 4" PVC fitting with both flanges cut off, that runs into a 4 inch coupling, over the filter flange. Everything is nice and snug and i am very happy with it. I also put a piece of 4"*6" alluminum under the filter so it wouldn't rub off all the insulation off of the wheel whell. Hope this helps!! Heres a bigger picture if it helps...

If you want the maximum inside diameter go fish up a good used boot out of a 99.5 - 2003 7.3. It fits on the outside of the air filter flange. See in my pic:

I'm about ready to pick up parts for this mod, and then remembered about the IAT sensor in that airbox. What have you guys done to it? Do you just mount it near the open filter, or actually drill a hole and mount it in the intake?

I left the sensor out, hasn't set anything thing off. its just sitting on the wheelwell now.

Only problem I have with the 99 and up duct work is because of the ribs it will create turbulence... not that it probably matters with the turbo sucking the air in but I still would rather have smooth ducting. We did that on my bro-in-laws 99 also fits just right.

Digital cameras sure are handy. I went out this morning in response to your statement about the ribs making turbulance. I took a picture and yes there are about 8-10 ribs there to give the tube flexibility. But the whole rest of the assembly is smooth from the filter to the turbo. And the same size as the outlet of the filter, not smaller like the PVC pipe jammed down inside would be. It boils down to a matter of personal taste, I guess.

if we were doing this on n/a gas engines where every little bit of air counts I'd say go with a piece of smooth exhaust piping but i don't think it would make a huge difference with the turbo. it was just a little concern i had.

Funny how their is a post on this . I have been running one of these setups for the past year or so.I was just at my buddy/racecar builder friend's shop , and he was saying how he could build me a 4'' piece of pipe to take the place of the flexy rubber ribbed piece. He said the gains would be minimal , but overall appearance , and possibily turbo "sound" would increase.

He builds one off turbo setups for racecars , so he knows all about airflow and so on.Not sure if I am going to do it or not. Have a motorcycle needing some custom parts at the momment.

hey guys i used a 4" piece of aluminized exhaust pipe. it was a 45 degree with about 6 or 8 inches on each side then a rubber boot from napa made for turbo intakes. mine look exactly like a tymar. but i also paid more than you guy are for materials. i get parts at cost and actually didn't save more than $50 bucks over buying a tymar. but i painted mine to match my truck so that worth cool points right?
