this one has me baffeled....
89 F-150 4x4, 5 speed manual. usually have to push extremely hard on the clutch to start the truck. there's some kind of safety mechanism. now..nothing. I can turn the ignition to 'on' but it won't go any farther. I've removed the switch, it's fine. Can't find any logical connection between the clutch and ignition switch. Open to suggestions.
yes, truck starts fine....push start or just hotwire the seleniod. just can't get the switch to move to the 'start' position. is there a mechanical safety device?
Does it have anything to do with the steering wheel lock. You know when you take out the key and then turn the wheel it locks into place until the next time you put the key back in. This has happened to my on my 02 F150 a couple of times when the wheels are almost at full turn, it takes a bit of effort unlock the wheel and then start it. Just another idea.
steering works fine, I've been driving the truck. There is some goofy little ****/lever under the steering column that doesn't seem to do anything. I think that used to be the ignition locking device. Want to know what to look for before I rip in to the steering column.
you might want to check the actuator in the steering column, there are several good threads about this, try searching for ignition switch or key switch, i had to replace the actuator in my truck, 90 f150 5spd tilt wheel, couldn't turn the key far a nuff to crank the truck over, all the dash lights would come on but wouldn't go that extra little turn to crank it, the actuator was like 10 bucks at ford dealer
If it turns out to be a lower actuator, which is a common problem, take a look at these threads. If you follow all the internal threads within these threads it should be most of what you need.
Thats what it sound like to me also! You might look at the instructions that came with the stw if you still have them. The lock must be removed and installed in a certion position. The chilton manual also covers this. Their is a splined gear that must jive with the switch other wise you can ture the key and it wont quite get to the start position.
good luck!
